The evaluation of musculoskeletal disorders seen in type 2 diabetic patients

Diabetes mellitus, describes a metabolic disorder of multiple aetiology characterized by chronic hyperglycaemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. In addition to micro and macroangiopathic complications, diabetes mellitus is also associated with several musculoskeletal disorders.75 diabetes mellitus type 2 patients and 75 non-diabetic controls were included into our study. Locomotor system examination of patient and control group were evaluated by the same phiysican in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department. In the present study we aimed to determine the the prevalance of some of musculoskeletal disorders such as adhesive capsulitis, dupuytren?s contracture, limited joint mobility syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome in both type 2 diabetics and control groups. We also investigated the correlation between these disorders and duration of diabetes, age, sex, body mass index and HbA1c level.There was no significant difference between the age and sex of the groups involved into this study. The mean body mass index was determined as 30.98±4.5 kg/m2 in diabetics, 26.59±3.9 kg/m2 in control group. The mean duration of diabetes mellitus was 4.09±5.6 year and the mean level of HbA1c was 7.73±2.2 %. There was significant difference between the groups when adhesive capsulitis, dupuytren?s contracture, limited joint mobility syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome prevalance are considered. Also there were significant association between adhesive capsulitis and HbA1c, dupuytren?s contracture and duration of diabetes mellitus, limited joint mobility syndrome and bone mineral dansity, carpal tunnel syndrome and gender of the patients.In conclusion, the musculoskeletal disorders that have an effect on quality of life are more commonly seen in diabetes mellitus patients than normal population. Therefore regulation of fasting blood glucose levels and proper treatment of diabetes mellitus is also essential from standpoint of musculoskeletal disorders which might appear in these patients. The patients should also be aware about these disoders whom most of these musculoskeletal disoders should be prevented when diagnosed and treated earlier.
