Kitchen design in toki buildings: Case of Denizli, Turkey

Kitchen is a workshop for its residents. A well-designed kitchen, saving the time and energy, makes the users less tired. In order to spend the time efficiently in the kitchen, it is necessary to plan the sink, stove and refrigerator properly. In this study, the kitchens of the people living in the Housing Development Administration in Akvadi Region in Denizli Province (TOKI) were examined and user's satisfaction from their kitchens were analyzed. Also, the alternative kitchen designs were realized by taking into consideration results from the examination of kitchen and user's satisfaction. Also, when kitchen spaces in TOKİ were examined it was determined that the planned kitchen settlement was not done. Even though the materials used in kitchens established by TOKI had both low quality and wrong settlement plan, it was found out that the residents were satisfied with their current kitchen equipment and layout. The majority of users preferred cream color in their kitchen furniture. They mostly selected marbelite for the kitchen counter surface, laminate flooring for the doors and shaft of cabinet as material. They used ceramic material between the kitchen counter and the upper cabinet. Most of them had a meal in the kitchen. Alternative kitchen designs realized for 2+1 and 3+1 houses of TOKI have provided a well-planned kitchen in the context of user's satisfaction. As a result, it is necessary to plan and design the kitchens meeting the needs of users. Selection of the suitable materials for the kitchen and planning the kitchen considering the user's needs is very crucial.
