Examples of mansplaining in the media in the context of gender

The concept of mansplaining is a word that has grown in society and settled into the language. Although it has always been exerienced throuhout history, its use has become widespread in recent times. It is explained as men explaining things to woman with a condescending and sarcastic expression, and interrupting the interlocutur thinking that the knows the truth, regardless of his interlocutor's expertise and knowledge. Mansplaining is both psychological violence and a communication problem. If it is not prevented, women who are silenced, marginalized, lose their self-esteem, and whose productivity will be taken away will be created. The purpose of this study, first of all, it is to recognize the mansplaining stuation and raise awareness. Another purpose is; Although mansplaining is discussed from different perspectives in foreign literature it is to fill the gap in the literature as it is not mentioned in Turkish literature. Media is the mirror of society, it reflects society. Media has an interactive structure. Therefore, as much as it feeds on society, it also has the power to influence society. The mansplaining situation experienced in society is reflected in the media and appears in all media publications. While this sometimes raises awareness, sometimes it legitimizes the situation. For this reason, it is imortant to examine mansplaining , expecially in the media. Within the scope of this study, various media contents were examined and mansplaining was observed in different types of publications and analyzed in detail. The program 'Tarihin Arka Odası', the series 'Gibi', the live broadcast 'Fransa'da Sokaklar Alev Alev', the documentary 'Savunma Sanayiinin Yalnız Dehaları' and the movie 'Kış Uykusu' were determined as samples and examined by the discourse analysis method. As a result, in the examples examined; it was observed that there were sexist discourses and gender roles were clearly given. Mansplaining behavior was observed in all examples and althoughvery rarely , women also exhibited this behavior towards men. It has been observed that male individuals also apply mansplaining to their fellow men,whom they think are weaker than themselves.
