Emin Alper cinema within the framework of gender studies

From the archaic period to the present, all societies have had norms based on gender. Powers and masculine systems have strengthened their authority through gender inequality. Throughout history, this authority has marginalized women and legitimized male dominance. This inequality began to be unacceptable with the Industrial Revolution. The labor movements that began after the Industrial Revolution gradually evolved into the women's movement. The emergence of feminism strengthened these movements and enabled women to gain certain rights. Cinema has also addressed these movements, projecting women's representation onto the silver screen and addressing gender issues. However, the representation of women in cinema has always been a subject of debate. While some films, particularly Hollywood, have characterized women as commodities, others have chosen to portray situations related to femininity and masculinity. Emin Alper is one of the few directors in Turkish cinema who has addressed gender issues and, more specifically, the social positions of men and women. In this context, this thesis will examine gender debates through four films by Emin Alper.
