Abstract (EN)

This study explores the history of the Imperial Riflemen (Tüfengiyan-ı Hazret-i Şehriyârî), a pivotal unit within the palace organisation during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II, and examines the life of its commander, Sertüfengî Arnavut (Albanian) Tahir Pasha. Established to ensure security in and around the Yildiz Palace, the tüfekçis were shaped by the administrative ethos of the Hamidian era and held a notable presence in Istanbul's social life as well as in the political and social dynamics of their native regions. The study highlights their influence as a social group and their role in maintaining palace security, operating with minimal bureaucratic oversight. Particular focus is given to the biography of Tahir Pasha, who led the unit from its foundation to its dissolution and emerged as a key figure among the courtiers of Yildiz wielding considerable authority. Combining institutional and social history with biographical analysis, this research provides a nuanced understanding of the Imperial Riflemen within the broader security framework of Abdulhamid II's administration and its socio-political impact during the period.
