Abstract (EN)

In this study, Turgut Cansever's views on the concept of space are discussed. His thoughts on the concept of space are analysed by referring to his views on human, being and belief. Many theses have been written on Cansever's views. However, these theses are written in the fields of architecture, sociology or public administration and are rather studies in which the philosopher-architect is analysed through his architectural practice. However, it is understood that no thesis on Cansever has been written in the field of philosophy. This study is a study in the field of philosophy. In the study, Cansever's conception of the concept of space and whether this conception has a philosophical character has been tried to be discussed. The claim of originality of the thesis is here. Whether Cansever's view of the human problem and architectural issues is related to some philosophical disciplines that are considered important in twentieth century philosophy and the influence of Islamic faith on his thoughts are analysed. In addition to Cansever's views on space, his criticisms of other conceptions of space are also included in this study. Throughout the study, it was understood that Cansever, while expressing his views on space, did so by criticising other conceptions of space. The intense critical attitude of the intellectual-architect required his criticisms to be dealt with in a separate section in the study. As stated, the study aims to answer the question of whether the architect's understanding of space contains a philosophy of space. He did not deal with the subject on a single cultural ground, but analysed the phenomenon of space in terms of its manifestations in Islamic, Western and Asian cultures. As a result of the study, it was concluded that the architect's practice of thinking about the space he realises is a philosophy. Because while examining the concepts of architect, space and architecture, he did this by examining the concepts from historical and etymological perspectives. For example, he mentioned the semantic relationship of the concept of architect with beautifying the world, and revealed the relationship of the concepts of space and architecture with the beliefs and thought structures of the periods throughout history. In these analyses, he analysed the concepts and practices of space and architecture and stated that there was a belief, thought (or philosophy) behind them and aimed to reveal them. Therefore, it was concluded that he should be considered not only as an architect, but also as a thinker-architect and his intellectual activity as a philosophical practice.
