Abstract (EN)

In this dissertation, five selected Turkish lignites (Tunçbilek, Soma, Çan, Saray, Orhaneli) were gasified at the unique pilot scale entrained flow gasifier of Turkey. The gasification system consists a gasifier which had 1 m internal diameter, 2.5 meter height along with coal crushing and drying unit, fuel feeding system, quencher, spray tower, mist eliminator, ash removal system, water treatment tower, ID Fan and a flare. A novel, patented fuel spray feeder which seperates the oxygen and coal streams were also developed by using the experimental and CFD optimization tools. The experimental studies were performed by using this novel fuel spray feeder and aimed a operation temperature above 100 °C of the coal ash fusion temperature. Syngas lower heating values were achieved between 6.6-10.5 MJ/Nm3 by adjusting the ER between 1-0.5 and the comparative graphics of the syngas compositions, the lower heating values and the cold gas efficiencies were given. The experimental results were also compared with an equilibrium model based on Gibbs reactor developed in ASPEN HYSYS software. Precautions for improving the gasifier operation such as % 6 limestone addition to the Tunçbilek coal to prevent the reactor throat stucking and precautions to improve reliability such as replacement the existing high alumina based refractory with the brick type high crom oxide (Cr2O3) contant refractory type to improve the reliability were also given in scope of this thesis.
