Abstract (EN)
In the history of art, the subject of village has gained importance in different periods, from literature to painting, and more works have been revealed, mostly these studies were produced with intellectual or ideological concerns. In this study, first of all, the village phenomenon and the village theme in western painting were discussed in general. Afterwards, the village theme in Turkish painting was examined as a contemporary Turkish painting art before the western understanding and directly oriented to the western understanding. The village theme is the formation that has taken place in painting circles in the process until today, groups and individual approaches are taken into account. In the pre-Western period, when rural life and city life were not distinctly separated, socio-economic boundaries are observed mainly between the palace and its surroundings and the countryside. For this reason, the village theme does not have a privileged place in painting. The village theme did not come to the fore in the first period of contemporary Turkish painting. Painters dealing with village or rural life mostly adopted the landscape genre with an impressionist style. In the following years, especially after 1938, it was observed that the importance of the village theme in Turkish painting increased. From 1938 to 1944, the painters of the period turned to rural subjects with the country trips carried out in order to develop national art awareness.During this period, Group D artists, who participated in these trips together with the Independents, used the village theme extensively in their paintings. The village theme in Turkish painting has been dealt with intensively in the period shaped in the direction of the general tendencies of the Yeniler ve They Group. While the socialist realist tendencies of the painters of this period led them to paint social problems,The village theme has mostly emerged as a part of social issues in the context of migration to the city. After 1950, the variety of subjects in Turkish painting is quite high.Compared to the Turkish painting art before 1950, the village theme was frequently included in this period. However, each of these paintings differs both in style and technique. After 1950, the only group that stood out in the context of the village theme was the New Branch Painters. However, these painters were also ideologically interested in the village and tended to this issue mostly on the basis of social problems. However, there are hardly any painters who include the village theme in their paintings outside of the context of social problems.
