Alternative women's media in turkey

In this study, the history of media and the alternative media of women have been researched. As an exemplary media of women, Uçan Süpürge Kadın Haber Sitesi (Flying Broom Association Women News Site) has been examined. It has been researched how the words said by women are mediated over an alternative channel and in this respect the components of the alternative feminist public sphere have been discussed. In the first chapter of the research, the arguments on what alternative media are to be settled by different approaches to the concept and the alternative media's criticism to hegemonic media is examined. In the second chapter, alternative publishing history is examined and Feminist alternative media history in Turkey is viewed. In the third chapter, the concept of public sphere is extensively discussed; and public sphere of feminists and women's media as one of the important components of this public sphere are spoken about. At the last chapter of the research, the website of Uçan Süpürge Derneği (Flying Broom Association), chosen as the example of alternative women's media, is analyzed. In addition to the comprehensively incurred interviews with the employees of the association, the news in the website of the association is examined by quantitative content analyze method. In the light of the findings, it has been confirmed that alternative women's media is one of the channels in terms of the activity of the feminist counter-publics and it plays an effective role in enabling women to discuss their problems and to find solutions to their problems; and that it shows driver features for feminist organizations and the solidarity among women not only by their publications but also by means of the educational programs, conducted projects, women's film festivals, seminars and the active use of social media; productive feature for alternative content by the woman-oriented journalism approach; and participative features by incorporating women into news finding-writing processes.
