The Problems and solutions for the art teaching programmes in education faculties in Turkey

Prof. Dr. İ. Halil TÜRKER With this study, it was aimed to determine the opinions of Art teachers about the problems and solutions of the departments of Art Teaching. It was also aimed to determine if there were any differences according to the personal features. Besides it was aimed to stress the importance and necessity of Art teaching in the framework of general education. The study was conducted in 21 Art teaching departments in Turkey in 2001- 2002 academic year and the 323 teachers were included in the study. The data which were accepted valid and useful were obtained from 79.9 % of the population. The data were colected with a questionnaire named "The problems at the Departments of Art Teaching". The first and second parts of the questionnaire included 33 items and they were about the content of Art teaching programmes. In analyzing the data frequency, percent and chi-square (X2) were used. In data analysis.05 significant level were used and SPSS 10 for windows statistics packape were benefited. According to the findings obtained from the study it was determined that most of the teachers working in Art departments had intermediate level English, they did not participate panels, seminars and conferences. It was also seen that there was nobody having foreign articles, books and rewards. In the opinions about the problems in Art teaching departments, they expressed that they had many problems when they accept students for the departments in the exams and they did not have an art gallery and libraries and the teachers mostly neededlibrary. They also had problems in dual educations, besides the budget and physical equippments were not sufficient, the art teaching departments were poor from the point of technological aids and teaching staff. It was also found that the teachers thought that specialization was very necessary for teaching staff and the students who graduated on these departments did not have a good level for being accepted as an art teacher. According to the views on teaching hours, content and applying content in Art teaching departments in Education faculties it was determined that the class hours for Design Course was insufficient and both the content and the level of applying content were insufficient too. It was also determined that the class hours were not sufficient in the courses Basic Project, Art Workshop and optional Art Workshop.
