Reflection of education on cartoons in Turkey: 1940-1970

This study is about education related cartoons published in Cumhuriyet Newspaper, Tercüman Newspaper, Akşam Newspaper, Akbaba Magazine, Karikatür Magazine and Karagöz Magazine between the years 1940-1970. In this study, the changes in education in the early years of Turkey have been examined through cartoons. In Turkey, between the years 1940 and 1970, important political changes took place, different practices and efforts were made for education to reach every corner of the country. Also, efforts were made to increase the number of universities, number of literate people and these changes were reflected in the cartoons in the newspapers and magazines during the time. As a result of this research, cartoons dealing with the educational conditions of the period in six periodicals were categorized under seven themes. The cartoons were analysed with the denotational and connotational analysis with the semiotic approach of Roland Barthes. When cartoons about educational developments and problems of the period are examined, it seems possible to see the existing problems in the field of education at that time.
