Examining freshmen's attachment styles and, level of loneliness and adaptation to the university life

This study was conducted to find out whether there is a significant difference between freshmen's attachment styles, and their adaptation to university life and loneliness levels. The sample of the study consists of freshmen enrolled at the Faculty of Education in Mersin University in 2018-2019 academic year. The sample of the study consists of students who did not study one-year preparatory class and started directly from the first semester. In the study, a Generic Information Form, consisting of 12 questions such as with whom they stayed during your childhood, who took care of them between the ages of 0-6 and during the school-age, was conducted on the students. Moreover, a 45-question University Adaptation Scale and 20-question U.C.L.A. Loneliness Scale as well as 30-question Relationships Scale have been conducted on the students. Reviewing the literature, it has been observed that the individuals in between high school and the university, had adaptation problems especially in the first year of the university due to different individual and social circle reasons. It has been observed that the individuals started to adapt to university life during the following years of university education, however some of them could not continue their education. For this reason, the study was conducted only on the freshmen. In order to determine whether there is a significant difference between students' attachment styles subscales, university life adjustment subscales and loneliness levels, the MANOVA test was conducted. TUKEY test was used for scoring with significant differences. As a result of the analysis; a significant difference was found between secure attachment style, academic adjustment and social adjustment. A significant difference was found between fearful and preoccupied attachment style and emotional adjustment. A significant difference was found between dismissing attachment style and academic adjustment. There was no significant difference was found between students' loneliness levels, attachment styles and university adjustment scale.
