Correlates of cyberbullying experiencesamong university students regarding extra-curricular activities

The aim of this study is to test the correltaes of cyberbullying experiences among university students regarding extracurricular activities. Data were collected from 517 students studying at Gaziantep University in the spring term of 2018-2019. In this study, the Revised Cyberbullying Inventory for University Students, Extracurricular Activity Questionnaire and personal ınformation form were the data collection tools. According to the results, male students bully more than female students. However, there was no significant difference between male and female students in terms of cyberbullying victimization. Among the most common cyberbullying were cursing to someone in a social environment, taking information from a personal computer or from smartphone without permission, and spreading gossip or rumors. The behaviors most frequently exposed to cyberbullying by university students were cursing in the cyber environment, sending embarrassing messages containing threats on the internet, and taking information from a personal computer or smart phone without permission. Reading books, magazines or novels, amateur or professional long-distance trekking and cinema were the most frequent extracurricular activities of university students. Multiple regression analysis revealed that participation in extracurricular cultural activities and participation in artistic activities negatively predicted cyberbullying perpetration. Yet, participation in extracurricular cultural activities and participation in artistic activitiesdid not predict cyberbullying victimization. Also, participation in extracurricular sports activities did not predict cyberbullying victimization and cyberbullying perpetration. Research findings show that gender was not a significant predictor in terms of participating in extracurricular activities.
