Nutrition habits and obesity risk in university education: Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University example

In this study, Namik Kemal University students were observed in order to determine their dietary habits and the frequency of obesity. The students were grouped in accordance with the World Health Organization obesity categorization by measuring the students weights, heights and the body mass index. The study aims at examining the gender differences in the relationship between "the status of being overweight and obese", and individual and environmental factors affecting the obesity formation, by using the data obtained from this questionnaire. The first part of the thesis provides general information such as; definition of a diet, eating habits, food hygiene, sufficient and balanced diets versus insufficient and unbalanced diets as well as eating habits in youth. Part two of this thesis provides a definition to obesity , while stating the possible factors leading to obesity as well as the the potential health issues may be resulted. Possible solutions, methods of treatment, the frequency of obesity in Turkey as well as the World and the economical implications is also discussed in this section. The final part shows results of the questionnaire applied on the students of Namik Kemal University. The questionnaire has been analysed with chi squared test and interpreted by descriptive analysis. The reliability of the questionnaire was measured by the Cronbach Alpha test. In addition, the results of the chi-square test of the data obtained by the questionnaire were compared with the results of previous studies on nutritional habits and obesity, and the effects of economic, genetic, environmental and cultural factors and individual preferences on obesity formation were examined.
