An investigation of the relationship between perceived parental attitudes of university students and their ability to express their feelings

In the light of the researches that reveal the Dec between the self-expression of the individual and the psychological well-being of parent-child relations; knowing the relationship between parental attitudes and emotion expression will help determine which parental attitude will have a more positive impact on their development and psychological well-being for children. For this reason, the aim of the study is to examine the relationship between the perceived maternal and paternal attitudes of university students and their ability to express their feelings. The study was designed on the correlational research model. The sample of the study consists of 506 students, including 276 girls and 230 boys, who are studying for a master's degree in clinical psychology at Istanbul Gelişim University. In the study, Sociodemographic Information and Data Form, Parent Attitude Scale and Emotion Expression Scale were used for data collection purposes. The Sociodemographic Information and Data Form was created by the researcher. The form contains information about gender, age, class, parental status and parental education levels, the number of siblings and the number of children. Perceived parental attitudes of college students and being able to express the feelings for the evaluation of the relationship between the levels of SPSS statistical analysis program were used. According to the results of the research, it was observed that the sibling presence variable did not affect the attitude and emotion expression of parents. It has been determined that the education levels of the parents predict the democratic attitude dimension. In the study, it was found that expressing emotions has an inverse relationship with the dimensions of authoritarian attitude and protective attitude; and it has a positive relationship with the dimension of protective attitude.
