Abstract (EN)

The study was conducted methodologically in order to evaluate the Turkish adaptation, validity and reliability of Sleep Belief Scale. The data in the study were collected by the researcher between January and March 2020 by using face-to-face interviews with healthcare professionals working in intensive care and emergency units in the internal and surgical units of Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Training and Research Hospital. 200 health professionals matching the sample participated in the study. Data in the study were collected by a questionnaire including demographic characteristics and sleep belief scale. Language validity of the scale was provided by using translation-back translation method. Ten experts were consulted for the content validity and the Content Validity Index was found to be 0.99. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) method was used to determine the construct validity of the scale. The scale obtained in the Turkish adaptation as a result of factor analysis consists of 20 items and 3 sub-dimensions. The sub-dimensions of the scale showed a different structuring than the original scale. The sub-dimensions related to the scale obtained were named as "Sleep Cycle Behavior", "Attitude Related to Sleep", "Habits Incompatible with Sleep". The reliability of the scale was examined by internal consistency (item statistics and test halving) and invariance (test-retest). The internal consistency Cronbach Alpha coefficient of the scale was calculated as 0.798. Correlations of sleep belief scale items were statistically significant at p <0.05 significance level. Test-retest scale total score correlation of Sleep Belief Scale was found 0.858 in the study. As a result, the scale obtained as a result of the adaptation study of Sleep Belief Scale into Turkish is a valid and reliable measurement tool. The scale can be used to determine individuals' attitudes towards sleep and sleep beliefs. Keywords: Sleep, sleep belief, scale, attitude, reliability and validity.
