The contribution of verbals to the purpose development of writing skills in German teaching as foreign languages

In this study, the use of gerunds, which have an important place in the grammar area, is examined in German and Turkish, which are two different languages in terms of both source and structure, and the contribution of this use to the development of writing skills is examined in accordance with the purpose. It is attempted to identify the differences and similarities in the use of gerunds in Turkish and German. It is based on determining the meaning and use of gerunds, which have a crucial place in teaching German as a foreign language, in Turkish and catalyzing the understanding and teaching of the subject of gerunds in German. In this thesis based on a literature review, a general survey model is used. Some publications on Turkish and German grammar are used to achieve the study's goal. After gathering and classifying the information from grammar books written in Turkish and German, postgraduate studies, articles, and studies conducted in German and Turkish, the contribution of gerunds to the development of writing skills in German as a foreign language is examined by mentioning the difference in the use of gerunds in the two languages. The detailed examination of gerunds in Turkish and German reveals that the key similarities in both languages are that gerunds, which play a crucial role in both languages' grammars, are generally derived from verbs, mostly produce temporary nouns, and function as different elements in sentences. In addition, some general differences between Turkish and German due to the difference in source and structure, such as the fact that Turkish is an agglutinative language while German is an inflected language, the difference in syntax, and the fact that German has gender and plurality expressions that Turkish does not have, constitute the main source of difficulties in learning gerunds. The following methods can be utilized in general to prevent the obstacles that native Turkish and German as a foreign language learners would confront when developing their writing skills on the subject of gerunds: To teach grammar topics in the native language by comparing them to grammar topics in the target language and to have a large number of exercises on the subject when teaching German as a foreign language; to make translations from German to Turkish and from Turkish to German on the subject; to explain the differences between the two languages by making comparisons, and to emphasize the importance of writing as one of the four basic skills can facilitate the teaching and learning process Writing has an indisputable contribution to language learning. Writing in a foreign language enables students to use and develop the correct structures, idioms, vocabulary, and punctuation in that language. Indeed, with writing, individuals learn how and in what way to write, and in this way, they gain experience in how to transfer information into writing. Based on the idiom "spoken words fly away, written words remain," study has indicated that writing has a significant function in teaching German as a foreign language in terms of the duties and uses of gerunds in sentences.
