Research on grammar teaching methods in textbooks used for teaching Turkish to foreigners

This study aims to determine whether the grammar teaching methods in the textbooks for teaching Turkish to foreigners comply with the relevant methods, by presenting the syllabus of the grammar teaching methods in the textbooks that are the most frequently used materials for teaching Turkish to foreigners. In this research, Turkish textbooks for foreigners were selected as a model, and these textbooks, which are deemed as written sources, were analyzed in terms of grammar and the determined criteria. The research is based on the document review, i.e. a qualitative model. The target population of the research involves all the textbooks prepared for those who learn Turkish as a foreign language. As it was not possible to have access to all the textbooks in the target population, the textbooks selected through convenience sampling constituted the sampling of the study. Considering that a book series is prepared based on the same syllabus and method, it was concluded that A1-A2 level books published by three different publishing houses would be suitable for the analyzing. In this scope, the target population of the study was selected as; Gazi University TOMER Turkish Teaching Kit for Foreigners A1-A2 Textbook, Istanbul Turkish Teaching Kit for Foreigners A1-A2 Textbook and Hitit Turkish Teaching Kit for Foreigners Basic A1-A2 Textbook The study is a qualitative research aiming to analyze the Turkish textbooks, used as a foreign language book, in terms of grammar teaching; therefore, document analysis method was adopted in the analysis of the obtained data. Within the scope of the study, review of literature was conducted to analyze the Turkish textbooks for foreigners with regard to grammar and the opinions of the experts in this field were consulted. As a result, an analysis criterion framework consisting of 5 criteria was created and analyses were made within the framework of these criteria. In the analysis of the data, initially, contents sections and units of each book were scanned in order to determine how the subjects in these textbooks are organized and then the syllabuses adopted by each book were determined. In the conclusion part, textbooks teaching Turkish as a foreign language were analyzed as to what extent the grammar teaching methods in these textbooks included the constructivist approaches and evaluations were made about the up-to-dateness and suitability of these textbooks in grammar teaching.
