A study on simplification of stories named apartman and Köpek by Sabahattin Ali to a1-a2 levels in teaching Turkish to foreigners

Reading books suitable for every level are the needs of every student who learns Turkish as a foreign language. Original texts should be prepared for this need, and novels or stories containing Turkish cultural elements written by Turkish writers should be simplified. Many language books are written and published for the purpose of teaching Turkish as a foreign language. However, there are not many options for students to access when looking for a supplementary book. Yet, students who are confronted with reading texts from level A1 still need story books with exercises that are appropriate for their age and level. The purpose of this study is to create suitable stories by simplifying for the students at level A1-A2 who are learning Turkish as a foreign language. When adaptation to the level was made, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages was examined and the achievements of the students were determined and prepared. With this adaptation work, literary works written for native language readers are also used in the field of teaching Turkish to foreigners. In this way, students will be able to identify our writers and works at the same time. In this study, all the stories of Sabahattin Ali had been reached, and it was assumed that the samples of the "Apartment" and "Dog" that constituted the sample were appropriate for students at the A1-A2 level. It is assumed that during the adaptation and simplification of the supplementary reading materials, I behaved objectively and prepared the work based on scientific evidence. These stories are adapted according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In order to contribute to reading skills after the adaptation, word practices as pre-reading activities, the reading comprehension questions and exercises as post-reading activities were prepared. The selected stories were adapted and simplified by considering the language achievements, linguistic knowledge and vocabulary of the students at A1-A2 level.
