The problem of consciousness in philosophy of artificial intelligence

This study is a philosophical investigation aiming the construction of a holistic view on the possibility of conscious artificial intelligence. The plan of this investigation is formed relying on the supposition that is "A holistic theory of artificial consciousness should be constructed upon a holistic account on natural consciousness". In this manner, to begin with, artificial intelligence and consciousness as the components of the artificial consciousness, which is a hybrid concept, are handled seperately. Then, it is tried to examine the details of the approaches on artificial consciousness. Consciousness is defined as phenomenal experience in the introduction of this research. Therefore, all discussions in this study about the nature of consciousness are evaluated according to the criterion that is "the experiencer and the experienced object as intiristic correlations of experience should be taken into account by any supportable theory on consciousness". Additionally, by discussing on the relationship between machine consciousness and ethical, legal, epistemological issues, the problematical issues in the practical results of the construction of a conscious machine are indicated. In the last step, the question of "Is a conscious machine possible?" is tried to be answered step by step and it is claimed that machine consciousness is possible as a new version of consciousness that is incommensurable with human consciousness.
