Investigation of the relationship between patients diagnosed with eating disorders, psychological control from the parents, personal disorders and eating attitudes

The aim of this study is to examine the psychological control levels and personality disorders perceived by the eating disorder patients from their parents in terms of demographic characteristics. The sample of the study consisted of 119 patients who applied to the Istanbul Medical Faculty Psychiatry Clinic and were diagnosed with eating disorders. Demographic information form, Psychological Control scale, Rezzy Eating Disorders Scale and Coolidge Axis II Inventory were applied to the participants. Data analysis was done using SPSS 22.0 statistical package program. While evaluating the study data, descriptive statistical methods (Mean, Standard Deviation, Median, Frequency, Ratio, Minimum, Maximum), as well as the conformity of the quantitative data to the normal distribution, were tested with the Skewness values of the cut-off points (boundaries) of the kurtosis and skewness values. Pearson Correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between the scales. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to test the research questions. All the data obtained were tested at the level of significance p< .05. According to the results obtained, a significant relationship was found between the psychological control perceived from the mother and the eating disorder. It was found that the perceived psychological control from the mother differs significantly according to gender, and the psychological control perceived from the father differs significantly according to gender and age. A significant relationship was found between the perceived psychological control from the mother and narcissistic and obsessive compulsive disorder. When the levels of personality disorders were examined in terms of demographic characteristics, it was found that there were differences according to age.
