Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT PHILOSOPHICAL POSSIBILITY OF NEW ATHEISM: A STUDY IN THE CONTEXT OF SAM HARRİS' ARGUMENTS Dindar KARA Master of Science (Msc) Thesis, Philosophy and Religious Studies Supervisor: Associate Prof. Dr. Saim Gündoğan 2025, 125 p. This study examines the origins, basic arguments and effects of the new atheism movement. The historical development of atheism, the assumption that matter is eternal, the development of man in the evolutionary process and the existence of evil are discussed through fundamental issues, and the contemporary reflections of classical atheist arguments such as materialism, Darwinism and the problem of evil are discussed. It also examines how science and technology support atheist ideology and how they are used as propaganda tools. The approaches of contemporary representatives of new atheism, Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris, are highlighted and their views on religion, morality and spirituality are examined. The critical approaches presented by Harris in the context of modern philosophy of religion and his scientifically based understanding of spirituality are evaluated, and in this context, Harris's attitudes towards Islam in particular and religious beliefs in general are discussed from a critical perspective. The study examines both the theoretical foundations and socio-political consequences of new atheism and emphasizes the effects of this movement on the dialogue between religion and science. The study details how new atheism centers on scientific rationality and critical thinking and its conflict with religious dogmas. In this context, the ways in which Harris and other new atheist thinkers question religious beliefs and practices have further highlighted the tensions between science and religion in modern societies. Therefore, the aggressive style of new atheism towards religious beliefs and its potential to deepen divisions within society are discussed, and how this approach can affect people's freedom of thought and belief is also emphasized.
