Representation of immigrants in the local press: The case of Van Region and Prestige newspaper

The media, which has an important role in influencing our thoughts and convictions, has an important effect in the construction process of social reality. In this study, it was examined what kind of discourse the local media, which was effective in the construction process, adopted. For this purpose, the two newspapers with the highest circulation in Van, Van Region newspaper and Prestij news, were accepted as samples. The years 2018 to 2020 are determined as the time interval. A total of twelve sample news from these newspapers, two news for each newspaper and for each year, were examined. These news were handled in line with Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis and the language and discourse used in the news about immigrants and the way they were represented in the local media were revealed. In this way, findings on the representation of immigrants in the local media were presented.
