Abstract (EN)

YO-YO SYNDROME AND AFFECTİNG FACTORS Obesity and overweight are widely seen problems all around the world independent from age and sex. Every year more money is spent in slimming market. Obesity also may cause serious problems in a persons health, including cardiovascular system errors, diabet, cancers and many more. Despite the money spent preventing obesity, success rates are very low. Its shown that only %2-5 of people loosing weight are successfull to maintain their weight, %95-98 gains it back. This loosing and gaining progress turns into a cycle in some people and its called the yo-yo syndrome or yo-yo effect. In this study we applied Nutritonal Status Information Questionnaire to 84 (80 women, 4 men) participants with yo-yo syndrome and collected data about their physical, psychological, familial, nutritoinal, sociological status. These data is evaluated in the statistical program, SPSS 20.0. From the evaluated data, 2 factors are shown to be related to high body mass index (BMI) scores, which are menstrual cycle irregulation in women and the high number of past diet experiences (p<0,05). When data about pre and after a diet is evaluated, some positive changes in general nutrition are detected, such as increase in the number of main and snack meals and water intake, decrease in white bread and soda consumption (p<0,05). But no change in sweets and bakery product consumption is detected (p>0,05). High consumption of sweets and bakery products is one of the main reasons causing obesity. No change in consumption of these foods might be the reason explaining the unsuccessfull dieting experiences of the participants. In conclusion; we can say that, to stop yo-yo syndrome before starting, cautions against weight gain must be taken. If the person has already gain weight and experiencing the syndrome, more attention into behavioral theraphy should be given.
