The effect of motivational interview based on transtheoretical model stages on suicidal behavior and stress coping styles of depressed patients with high suicide risk

The act of suicide is destructive but avertable. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the effect of motivational interview based on transtheoretical model stages performed on suicidal behavior and stress coping styles of depressed patients with high suicide risk. The sample of the study is consisted of 72 depression patients, including a control group of 35 and an experimental group of 37, who applied to the psychiatry and emergency department of a training and research hospital with suicidal ideation or action. The data were collected with "Personal Information Form", "Beck Suicidal Ideation Scale (BSIS) ", "Stress Coping Strategies Scale (SCSS)". During the study, a total of 6 motivational interviews were made with the patients individually in the experimental group, once a month. In the first, the 3rd and 6th months meeting with patients, evaluations were done with scales. Descriptive analysis, chi-square, t test in independent groups and variance analysis in repeated measurements were used in the data analysis. When comparing the mean scores of the BSIS of the experimental group within the group, there was a significant decrease in the mid-test and post-test compared to the pre-test (p<0.01), however there was no significant decrease in the control group (p>0.05). Comparing the mean scores of the SCSS sub-dimensions of the experimental group within the group, a significant increase was determined in all sub-dimensions, while only the optimistic approach and the search for social support were significant in the control group (p<0.01). In the pretest, it was found that the mean scores of BSIS of the patients in the experimental group was higher than the control group (p<0.05), and there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of SCSS (p>0.05). In the post-test, it was determined that the means of BSIS of the patients in the experimental group decreased compared to the control group and there was a significant difference between the mean scores of SCSS (p<0.05). It has been determined that motivational interview based on transtheoretical model stages is effective in order to reduce suicide risk and strengthen coping with stress as an evidence-based practice. Psychiatric nurses are recommended to use motivational interviews in areas where behavioral change is expected.
