İşaretlerin iletiminde kullanılan Uzay-Zaman Kodlama (Space-Time Coding, STC) teknikleri sayesinde MIMO sistemler Tek Girişli-Tek Çıkışlı (SISO) sistemlere nazaran daha fazla kanal sığası sunmaktadırlar.

Thanks to this thesis, you can also learn installation of Xilinx development environment, installation of cross-compiling environment for embedded Linux systems, writing device drivers for embedded Linux systems, usage of i2c module inside processor part of Zynq and applying image processing application by creating user space application on embedded Linux operating system. In this thesis, there are six chapters. In chapter 1, you can infer purpose of writing this thesis and what information security systems are. Then you can examine digital information hiding and scrambling methods in chapter 2. New data hiding method is explained in chapter 3. The implementations about proposed method are showed in chapter 4. Experiments and their results are inferred in chapter 5 and in last chapter conclusions are cited. Comparing results of previous and proposed methods, you can infer same visual quality and similar computation number. The image which is used for covering, cover image, and the image which is produced after data hiding process, stego image, look similar to each other. You can understand it according to calculation PSNR value between cover and stego images. PSNR results are always stay higher than 35 dB. This result shows that data hiding process is imperceptible.

The exponential growth in mobile communication with the ever-increasing insatiable demand for higher data rates continues in a stable manner for years. In this regard, providing better spectral and energy efficiency, large gains, robustness and reliability by transmitting the signal with more than one antenna makes Large Scale MIMO is a key player in the fifth generation communication. In the concept of this thesis, accomplishment analysis of large scale multi - input multi - output antenna arrays located at the base station side was taken into consideration with the perspective of number of elements, beamwidth, the size of the phase shifter, amplitude and the capacity per user.
New clutter removal methods for through obstacle target detection
Nowadays, ultra–wide band (UWB) radars are extensively used for target imaging, detection and localization, health care applications, indoor motion detection, civil engineering applications, etc. UWB radars have also found many applications for buried object detection problem or through the wall target localization problem due to their ability to penetrate most of the non-metal materials such as bricks, wood, various types of soil, concrete and reinforced concrete, etc. In this thesis, we focus on the buried object detection problem where the radar used for this specific application is called as ground penetrating radar (GPR). It is known that one of the most important problems in images collected from GPR (it is called as GPR image or B-scan) is clutter since it degrades the detection performance. The clutter in the GPR image can be arisen by a various causes such as direct-wave arrival, ground-bounce, other candidate target-like objects, environmental variations (soil type, material type, etc.), weather conditions (sun, rain, snow, etc.). Therefore, it is impossible to eliminate the causes of clutter thus the obtained GPR image contain inherently heavy clutter. This heavy clutter conceals and attenuates the signal strength of the buried objects thus removing the clutter effect in the GPR image will certainly increase the probability of detection performance of the methods. To compare the available clutter removal methods with the proposed ones, we need a sufficient size simulated dataset and real GPR dataset in order to validate the effectiveness of methods with real GPR images. The simulated dataset is required since it can be used to report quantitative results besides the visual ones. The simulated dataset in this thesis is constructed by gprMax free–software which it uses Yee's algorithm to solve Maxwells equations in 3D using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The simulated dataset contains 112 GPR images and these GPR images are constructed by using seven different soil types, 2 different objects, 2 different burial depths and 4 challenging scenarios. In addition, the popular real GPR data from Vrije Universiteit Brussel is used to validate the performance of algorithms in the sense of visual perception. There are two main groups of approaches for clutter removal methods for buried object detection in GPR images. The first group is subspace–based methods such as principal component analysis (PCA), independent component analysis (ICA), singular value decomposition (SVD) and morphological component analysis (MCA). PCA, ICA and SVD perform matrix decomposition on the GPR image using different matrix decomposition constraints. After the GPR image decomposes into multiple sub–images by these methods, the first sub–image (most dominant one) is accepted as clutter and the remaining ones construct the target components. MCA is listed in this group but it uses the trained dictionaries in the pre-processing step to separate the GPR image into morphological components such as clutter and target. The second group approaches are based on the multi–scale and multi–direction (multi–resolution) based methods such as curvelet transform (CT), nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT), shearlet transform (ST) and etc. These methods are using different scaling and directional subbands to express the GPR image as a decomposition of coefficient matrices with multiple scales and directions. Then, the information found in different directions is used to separate the target from clutter. These methods are exploiting the intrinsic geometrical property of GPR image where the target has hyperbolic direction and the clutter has horizontal direction in GPR image. The most popular multi–resolution based method for clutter removal problem in GPR is CT since the optimized version of CT is publicly available with the name of fast discrete curvelet transform (FDCT). In this thesis, we propose methods for both group. For the first group, the non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) method is proposed which is extensively used in signal processing community for dimensionality reduction, feature extraction, source separation and classification purposes. This method is similar to other subspace–based methods however its constraint is different where all the elements in the decomposed matrices are non–negative and it is a reasonable constraint for clutter removal problem in GPR since the pixel intensity values are non-negative in GPR image. The clutter removal methodology of NMF is similar to PCA, ICA and SVD however the performance is better compared to them and the running–time of the proposed method is fast enough for real–time implementations. For the second group, multi–scale directional bilateral filter (MDBF) is proposed. This method uses bilateral filter (BF) method for multi–scale decomposition part and directional filter bank (DFB) for the multi–directional decomposition part. After the GPR image is decomposed into multiple directional subbands in different scales, the target and clutter components are found by using their inherent directional property and the horizontal information is removed in the decomposed subspace where it corresponds to the clutter. Then, the inverse transform is applied to the remaining subbands and the clutter-free GPR image is reconstructed. MDBF algorithm is proposed firstly and it is improved later by replacing multi–scale part (BF part) with neighborhood filter (NF). NF filter is similar to BF filter however it uses only one Gaussian kernel which depends on the range information and it is more reasonable for this problem. The additional spatial Gaussian kernel in BF does not contribute to the performance. Besides, eliminating one Gaussian kernel also reduces the computational complexity by half and help to increase the running–time of the MDNF method. Different metrics are proposed for the performance comparison of clutter removal methods in GPR images such as peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity index (SSIM), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and etc. Most of the performance metrics need reference (ground–truth) image however our simulated dataset does not have one. Therefore, ROC curves are used as evaluation metric which depends on the probability of detection (PD) vs. probability of false alarm rate (FAR) for quantitative analysis as well as visual results are presented. Both quantitative and visual results have shown that NMF has superior performance compared the other available popular subspace-based methods in literature and MDNF also outperforms the available and recently proposed multi–resolution based methods. In the overall comparison, MDNF show the best performance among all methods however it is not optimized as in FDCT thus the proposed NMF method is more suitable for fast implementations.
Change detection in multitemporal satellite images using multiscale bilateral filter and sift flow
In the past few decade the number of satellites orbiting earth has increased exponentially. These satellites vary in purpose and application ranging from communications, security, and military to climate monitoring and many more. This increment in the number of satellites observing earth's surface led to an abundance in remotely sensed data and satellite images. Furthermore, the recent development of new and advanced technology in the sensor field made images obtained thought satellites more reliable and accurate than ever. High-resolution satellite images provide a level of resolution unparalleled before. Change detection is process to establish and indicate the difference between two items. Multitemporal satellite images are a set of at least two satellite images of the same geographical area taken over different times. This makes change detection in multitemporal satellite images the process of establishing and indicting the difference between a set of at least two satellite images taken over different times. Change detection in remotely sensed images has many applications which range from climate change, disaster prediction, weather monitoring to urban planning and agricultural land change. The field of change detection in satellite images is growing rapidly due to necessity and need for efficient, reliable, fast and accurate change detection algorithms. However despite the abundance of literature facing these issues, truly reliable and accurate change detestation methods are scarce and even when they exist they tend to be slow and complex. The goal of this thesis is to introduce an accurate, robots, fast and unsupervised change detection algorithm. One of the most common methods of change detection are change detection algorithms that are based on the difference image. These algorithms typically use the difference of the two temporal images for further feature extraction and clustering. This makes them simple, fast and usually quite accurate. This makes building a difference image based algorithm a very enticing idea. Hence, the first algorithm proposed here, is an algorithm based on the difference image analysis. The bilateral filter is used to further enhance the difference image. This yields better features that can be used for clustering. The proposed algorithm checks many of the goals that were set in the beginning. It is accurate, fast and unsupervised. However, it underperforms in the robustness category. The problem with difference image based algorithms is that they fail on big real images, they work better on small images has a consistency in its change. This brings us to our second method; this method is based on image matching using dense correspondence. xxiii More specifically SIFT flow algorithm is utilized for change detection. The SIFT flow algorithm is more commonly used in video processing field. It uses scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) to match pixels in any two given images. SIFT flow is highly robust and extremely fast. A way to use this algorithm in change detection instead of its natural use is proposed: assuming that the two images have been previously registered. The SIFT flow between these two images will reflect change. False detections can be curbed by applying a threshold on the SIFT flow intensity. This method is simple in concept but extremely effective in application. The results of using SIFT flow as change detection algorithm proves to be good since it works under unideal conditions rather correctly. However the change map resulting from SIFT flow tents to be a little bit exaggerated and general. The two algorithms proposed so far are a perfect match for each other. The bilateral filter based algorithm finds small detail extremely accurately but underperforms when it comes to large regions of change. The SIFT flow based algorithm on the other hand locates the big areas of change correctly but struggles to find small details. This makes them a perfect match to each other, by applying SIFT flow first we can provide the bilateral based algorithm with the kind of data it likes, bordered areas of consistent change. By combining the two algorithms we can find accurate results on any scale of an image under any circumstance with high speed and efficiency, in other words we take the best of two worlds. The bilateral filter is first tested by presenting artifact to an image. The resulting image is considered the changed image. Then, the bilateral based algorithm is applied over these two images. The result is quantified by comparing the obtained change map to the artifact. Results using this approach show that the bilateral filter based algorithm performs much better than its peers in every aspect. Later, the SIFT flow algorithm and bilateral based algorithm are tested on more realistic data set. The results are presented in the form of change and heat maps. Change maps of the bilateral filter based method are rich in detail, however, they lack accuracy over large areas. SIFT flow based change maps are accurate but lack enough detail. On the other hand, the change maps obtained by combining the two algorithms are both rich in details and accurate.
Artificial tactile sensation by microstimulation of the hindpaw representation in the primary somatosensory cortex of behaving rats
In this thesis, rats were trained to detect the presence or absence of bursts of mechanical sinusoidal vibrations (duration: 0.5 s, zero-to-peak amplitude: 200 um, frequency: 40 Hz) delivered to the volar surface of their hindpaws in a novel vibrotactile operant chamber. In psychophysical experiments, psychometric curves were obtained for three frequencies (40 Hz, 60 Hz and 80 Hz). Then, the rats were implanted with microelectrodes in the hindpaw representation of the primary somatosensory cortex and trained to detect trains of biphasic charge-balanced current pulses (pulse width: 600 us, current intensity: 20-200 uA)(ICMS). They further tested in psychophysical experiments and psychometric curves were obtained for ICMS detection as in vibrotactile experiments. The psychometric data collected from vibrotactile and ICMS experiments were fitted with surface functions using the stimulus intensity and frequency. Psychometric correspondence functions (PCFs) were constructed based on the psychometric functions of five rats. The PCFs were used to estimate current intensities for a given tactile stimulus intensity and frequency. The PCFs were validated in an additional experiment at five frequencies (40 Hz, 50 Hz, 60 Hz, 70 Hz and 80 Hz). In this experiment, the rats performing vibrotactile detection task were presented with unrewarded trials containing either a vibrotactile or an ICMS stimulus. The vibrotactile and ICMS intensities were matched based on PCFs. Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic showed that the vibrotactile and ICMS stimuli produced similar psychometric curves in validation experiments (all p values >0.05 for 5 frequencies and 5 rats). Therefore, the PCF based method seems to be feasible for modulating the current intensities and frequency of ICMS in a somatosensory neuroprosthetic application.
Direct and inverse electromagnetic scattering problems in spherically layered media
The direct and inverse scattering problems related to radially inhomogeneous spheres have interesting mathematical properties alongside practical value. In the direct scattering problem, the acoustic or elecromagnetic parameters of the spherical scatterer, which are arbitrary functions of the radial distance only, are assumed to be known; and the aim of the problem is to determine the scattered field in the whole space. On the other hand, for the inverse problem, these parameters constitute the unknowns of the problem, and they are determined through the value of the scattered field supposed to be measured on a measurement surface in the outside region. For the solution of the direct scattering problem, different techniques, with certain advantages and limitations, exist in the literature. The analytical techniques such as dyadic Green's function are only valid for certain types of profile, whereas numerical solution techniques such as method of moments have limited accuracy and they are in general computationally expansive. For the inverse problem, established methods such as Newton's method or the contrast source inversion technique can be applied directly to the three dimensional problem; however, the computational effort necessary for this type of procedure will put a limit to its practical value. Therefore, it can be concluded that the problems involving radially inhomogeneous spherical scatterer is still open to contributions. In this thesis, a method to reduce the original three dimensional acoustic and electromagnetic problems into one dimensional forms has been developed. It has been demonstrated that such a method would be compatible with the available alternatives, and it will require less computational effort than the three dimensional solution techniques. It should be noted that although the orginal problem is a three dimensional one, the homogeneity along the angular direction enables one to replace it with one dimensional object and data equations involving only radial functions. For this dimension reduction procedure, the orthogonality of the spherical harmonics over the unit spherical surface have been used. In the acoustic case, the scalar acoustic field has been expressed as a series expansion in terms of scalar spherical harmonics. Since those are functions of the angular terms, and the geometry is spherically symmetrical, their orthogonality is preserved within the original three dimensional object equation. Therefore, it is possible to eliminate the angular terms via orthogonality relation, and to obtain one dimensional reduced integral equations involving the coefficients of the series expansion for the acoustic field. For the solution of the direct scattering problem these coefficients can be determined by a simple discretization of the one dimensional integrals along the radial direction. On the other hand, a Newton based iterative scheme has been formulated for the solution of the inverse scattering problem. In this formulation, the one dimensional equations are solved using an initial guess for the unknown parameters, and the coefficients of the measured scattered field constitute the data that is used to update the initial guess iteratively. The procedure for the electromagnetic case is similar to the acoustic one. However, since the problem is a vectorial one in this case, the electric field is expanded in terms of vector spherical harmonics. These vectorial functions also satisfy the orthogonality condition over a spherical surface, therefore it is possible to reduce the vectorial electric field integral equation into a system of one dimensional integral equations. The integrals once again will only contain the scalar coefficients of the series expansion for the electric field, which are functions of the radial distance only. The resulting system of equations can be solved simultaneously to obtain the coefficients. The Newton based algorithm that was used in the acoustic case can be adapted to electromagnetic inverse problem in a straightforward manner. Therefore, same technique will be applied for the solution of the electromagnetic profile inversion problem. The results of the numerical tests demonstrate that the method is quite reliable for determining the interior and scattered field in the case of acoustic or electromagnetic direct scattering problem. It is compatible with alternative methods, and it is computationally effective. Unlike analytical techniques which can only be used for piecewise homogeneous spheres, the method can be easily adapted to any kind of profile. Moreover, its accuracy is higher compared to the computationally more expansive numerical techniques. Therefore it is safe to assume that it can be used for practical applications involving complex scatterers such as head models. The acoustic or electromagnetic scattering problems involving radially inhomogeneous spheres are frequently encountered in the research fields such as biomedical engineering or material science. The method developed in this thesis can be reliably used in these problems. For the inverse problem, the method yielded quite satisfactory results for slowly varying continuous profiles, provided that an appropriate initial guess is chosen. Other than the initial guess for the unknown acoustic or electromagnetic parameters, the most important point that effects the outcome of the method is the initial parameters of the iterative process itself. Through various numerical tests, the optimal values of these parameters have been determined and presented in the thesis. However, it was observed that even for these values, the success of the method is considerably lower for more rapidly varying profiles. Especially for layered profiles, the method can only provide a smoothed approximation. Numerical tests also demonstrated that the method produces useful results for relatively low contrast values. It should be noted that these are well-known limitations of Newton based algorithms, and the method performs reasonably well for an iterative profile inversion technique.

Her kimyasal bağın polar yapısı birbirinden farklıdır. Her sınıf topraktan 30'ar tüp toprak örneği alınmıştır.
Layout techniques for analog building blocks and application to an adaptive output buck converter
Integrated circuits (ICs) have become an essential part of our daily lives. Different kind of chips called Application Specific Standart Product (ASSP) is being used in specific part of a system. Chip creation contains analog, digital and layout designs. Each design step is important to succesfully fabricate desired chips. There is a need for power management circuitry in ICs, in order to power each and every device. Today's trend of mobile technology increases the need of power management. LDOs, DC-DC converter or buck converter and buck-boost converters must be utilized. Inside ICs, power management circuit design is an active research area and there are many publications in the literature about this topic. This thesis focuses on basic layout, layout strategies and layout of buck converter. This thesis is organized as follow. In chapter 1, the fabrication process of. MOSFET devices are explained. Then basic layout structures are described in detail, starting from CMOS layout structures to diode, BJT layout and layout of passive components. Isolation structures are explained in chapter 4. These isolations are both contain process related isolation and layout design isolations. Issues coming from layout are given in detail in chapter 5 which affects block performance significantly. Layout matching is explained and demonstrated in chapter 6. These layout structures and strategies are very important in layout design. In chapter 7, analog blocks of adaptive output buck converter is explained in detail. The layout designs are analysed in detail to show what kind of layout structure is used. Most important part of buck converter is the pass device which is explained in detail with layouts. Resistive extraction tool is used to extract metallization resistance for spotting the weak parts in pass device metal structure. Moreover, this tool gives the total on resistance of pass device which can be given feedback to analog designer to modify their buck converter simulations. Total laid out pass device area is 800µ x 650µ while total buck converter design occupies 800µ x 940µ. Buck converter is designed in a 0.25µ process with 1 poly 5 metal process.
Biyolojik sinir sistemlerinin modellenmesi ve gerçeklenmesi
The elementary processing units of brain are the nerve cells, or neurons. Neurons are believed to be the key elements in signal processing. Those cells are analog units that work together to carry out the highly sophisticated computations in cognition and control. In traditional artificial neural networks, the neuron behavior is described only in terms of firing rate, but most of the real neurons, commonly known as spiking neurons, transmit information by pulses called action potentials or spikes. Spiking neuron models vary from the computationally simple Integrate and Fire (I&F) model to biologically meaningful Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) model. The network constructed with those models are called Spiking Neural Network (SNN). According to accuracy requirements and electronically easeness of implementation the appropriate model is selected for implementing the network. Today, SNN's has become essential to study the brain functions for Artificial Network Community. In this thesis, a new dynamical neuron model suitable for low power and compact VLSI implementation is presented. This model can operate in biological time and voltage scale. When designing the model, geometrical nullcline approach is used. In operational area, model has similar nullclines with INa,p+IK model resulting to equivalency in dynamic behaviour at subthreshold region. Offered model has two state variables such that one represents the membrane voltage while the other one represents the recovery variable. Also it has after spike reset mechanism as in hybrid models. Unlike Izhikevich and AdEx I&F model, only the membrane voltage is reset to a constant reset value after the spike reaches its apex. This is a big advantage of the model since implementing the hard reset of recovery variable requires large number of transistors which is a limiting factor for design of large-scale neuromorphic hardware. Recovery variable grows to the desired 'after-spike' value on its own in our model. Tangent hyperbolic characteristic of nullcline slows down the growth speed of state variable while approaching to the positive (or negative) saturation region of tangent hyperbolic. So this mechanism limits the growth speed as it will result to realistic spike timing. Even the new neuron model seems to have ten different parameters when it is scaled to obtain the minimum numbers of parameters it is seen that it has only four independent parameters and an input current. One can obtain nearly all of the major spiking templates of real biological neurons by only modifiying two of this parameters and input current. A software application in MATLAB to examine the neuro computational features of new neuron model with numerical simulations is developed, also. This application has a GUI for accepting the inputs from user and displaying the calculated outputs. By using this application it is shown that the model is capable of generating the most of the spiking patterns exhibited by the known types of neocortical and thalamic neurons when the proper parameter set is selected. New neuron model is constructed with tangent hyperbolic functions since it is odd symetric and easily implementable as VLSI circuit by using subthreshold CMOS technique. Judicious use of this technique leads to a very effective low power CMOS neuron. Implemented neuron circuit consist of a single first-order log domain filter, hyperbolic function generators, linear voltage dividers, compare & reset block and a voltage tunable current reference. In design phase, the simulation results are fitted to analytic expressions by using linear least squares curve fitting method. Accuracy metric of fitting is Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) value. The design parameters is iterated until RMSE value stays below a spesific value. This technique is named as Iterative Curve Fitting Method (ICFM). Long tailed circuit topology with cascode output stage is used for implementing the tangent hyperbolic function generators (THB). To minimize the effect of process parameters deviation, a core THB with minimum tail current supplied from matched 100pA current source is designed, then the output is multiplied by a constant value for obtaining the real output of different THB's. Linear voltage divider circuit consist of two layered ladder type diode connected NMOS transistors. Dividing ratio of this block is determined as 8.8. When compared with the conventional MOS voltage dividers offered configuration has the advantage of having less number of transistors for the same divider value and of reduced body effect. Source shifting or offset voltage is applied to this circuit since it operates at very low currents. Log domain filter is a current mode circuit such that it is completely suitable for the implementation of recovery variable of our neuron model. Source shifting is applied to this circuit, also. A comparator circuit which drives a discharge switch is designed. Comparator circuit is implemented by connecting the input of two stage inverter to the output of a simple long tailed circuit that acts as differential amplifier. Tail current of differential amplifier should be high enough to drive output inverter stage as fast as possible. Thus this current is selected 2.3 nA. Discharge switch is implemented with big sized NMOS transistor since it should have high current sink capacity. Process parameter deviation and temperature dependency are the two most critical problems effective on the circuit operation. Especially for the circuits based on subthreshold operation, temperature dependency is a very common problem. Therefore, a wide temperature range voltage tunable current reference circuit is implemented. Voltage tuning is needed for minimizing the effect of process parameters deviation. The tuning voltage values that guarantees the proper operation of neuron circuit at all process corners are obtained. Initial design and simulations are carried out with TSMC 0.18 micron technology by using LTSpice design tools. Then all the blocks of neuron circuit is designed again with AMS 0.35 micron SiGe-BiCMOS process by using Cadence® Virtuoso® tools for both verifying the previous design and implementing the Layout of the neuron. The circuit topology and transistor sizes are kept same as in TSMC design and obtained the same results by only modifiying the value of voltage, currents sources and capacitors. The operating and supply voltages is shifted to higher values since the transistor transconductance of AMS technology is quite lower than TSMC technology. Minimum channel width to length ratio is selected as 2 micron/2 micron at both designs for minimizing the effect of the absolute parameter deviation in sizing caused by the VLSI manufacturing process. AMS design occupies 0.0128 mm2 chip area. Power consumption is 277.5 nW for AMS design and 241 nW for TSMC design. Supply and offset voltages are 2.5 V and 0.5 V for AMS circuit, 1.5 V and 0.2 V for TSMC circuit, respectively. Spiking patterns obtained from circuit simulations perfectly matches with numerical results. In most of the synapse models, temporal dynamics are neglected and synapses are assumed as an instantaneous multiplier operator. A realistic model should take into consideration the spatial and temporal summation of synaptic currents. In the light of these observations, a new dynamical synapse model for coupling the neurons to create the realistic SNNs is offered. This model consist of similar terms as new neuron model that makes it also suitable for compact and low power VLSI implementation. The model allows to make a synapse excitatory or inhibitory by only altering the reversal potential parameter. Synchronized activity of neurons take role in a wide range from cognitive functions to rhythmic movements of animals. The phase response curve (PRC), i.e. the neurons's response to weak perturbations, is a useful tool to understand the collective dynamical properties of a neuron in a network. Therefore the PRC of new neuron with VLSI implemented parameters is extracted and shown that it has Type II PRC. Based on complete neuron and synapse models, synchronization behavior of different number of reciprocally connected neurons that form a ring coupled network with excitatory and inhibitory synapses is studied. Numerical simulations are accomplished and inphase, antiphase and N-phase synchronization behaviour for networks with 2, 3 and 4 neurons are observed. VLSI circuit of two reciprocally coupled neuron and a ring coupled network with 3 neurons is designed by using TSMC 0.18 micron technology. Because of weak coupling synaptic currents are so small to implement as VLSI circuit. So some scaling operations are made to shift the synapse circuit output current value in a VLSI implementable range. At circuit simulations the expected inphase, antiphase and N-phase synchronization patterns is successfully observed. Power consumption is 282 nW for two reciprocally coupled neuron and 320 nW for three ring coupled neuron network.
Microwave imaging of brain strokes
This thesis investigates feasibility of detection and continuous monitoring of hemorrhagic brain strokes in a realistic head phantom with microwave imaging. The head phantom is illuminated by 36 line sources and the scattering field data is calculated numerically with method of moments for each scenarios. Additive white Gaussian noise with minimum level 30 dB SNR is added for scenarios that are more realistic. Two different approaches are used for detection and continuous monitoring of blood region. In first approach, contrast source inversion method is used to reconstruct the blood region. Scattering fields' data that are obtained by a simulation on matlab platform at different frequencies from 500 MHz to 1.2 GHz is used for only input parameters for CSI method. No any other priory information is used. Moreover, results with either electrically different background mediums or free space are discussed in this approach. The numerical results show that it is possible to determine the square shape blooded area with size about 2.6cm x 2.6cm between the 800-1000 MHz frequency ranges in the dielectric-matching medium. In second approach, CSI method is used to reconstruction again except the input parameters scattering field data is replaced with differential data, which is the difference of two scattering fields' data. These scattering fields' data's are obtained in two different times. Hence, reconstruction contains of changes in multiple blood regions and provides information about the locations instead of all domain reconstruction. Here, aim is to determine the change of bleeding in sequential time frames. The numerical results show that it is possible to monitor the changes in the blood regions within the human brain, if optimal values of matching medium are chosen.
Comparisons of sige active downconversion mixers and a high performance sige active mixer design for s-band applications
In wireless systems, frequency conversion is widely utilized to transmit and receive low frequency signals. These conversions are fulfilled by mixer circuits which are driven by a large local oscillator signal and an input signal. A mixer multiplies these signals and output of the circuit includes two frequency components as sum and difference of frequencies of input signals. In downconversion applications, frequency differences of input signals are acquired at the output of the circuit and frequency of the signal is reduced. SiGe transistors provide high performance especially in non-portable applications because they have higher fT, lower noise and may fed by higher supply voltage in order to obtain high performance, compared to MOS transistors in the same process corner. S-Band applications such as basestations, radars, wireless modems etc. also need to high performance mixer; therefore, there are several commercial mixer products in order to implement frequency conversion for these applications. In this thesis, Chapter 1 gives general information about thesis. SiGe transistors, BiCMOS process and general RF performance metrics in mixer design such as conversion gain, IIP3, noise figure etc. are explained Chapter 2. Chapter 3 is related to active mixer design considerations. LO amplification circuit, and IF amplifier are utilized in the design of the mixers in order to obtain higher performance. In Chapter 4, firstly, these peripheral circuits used in mixer comparisons are described in detail. After this, Gilbert Cell, Micromixer, Caprio's Quad Based Mixer and Gilbert Cell Class AB mixer topologies are presented. Topology informations, hand analyzes, circuit elements, performance metrics, input matching, performance trade-offs of the circuits are examined in detail. At the end of the chapter, all mixers are compared according to determined performance metrics. Furthermore, figure of merit of the mixers in entire S-Band are given to easily understand performance of the mixers. In Chapter 5, Gilbert Cell Class AB Mixer is chosen, designed and laid out. The mixer which is described in previous chapter is reconfigured according to bondwire inductors and pad capacitances. Moreover, another high performance IF amplifier is designed. The whole mixer circuit is designed for 2 – 3 GHz RF frequency differently from comparison sections due to wireless applications. After design information, schematic and parasitic extraction results of the circuit are presented. Finally, future works and possible enhancements in the circuit are discussed. In Chapter 6, all study is summarized.
GaAs pHEMT class-E power amplifier design
A basic single-stage power amplifier circuit includes an active device, input matching circuit to match with source impedance, and an output matching circuit to match with load impedance. In a power apmlifier design, there are important parameters to be considered. These parameters include selection of active device, technology of active device, class of operaiton, intput and output matching network structure design, biasing, range of frequency, operation parameters such as required output power, gain, Power Added Efficiency (PAE), Input and Ouput Insertion Loss, S-parameters, etc. All these parameters shall be considered in the design and reaching design goals will end up in a successful design. Nowadays with improvements in designing wireless communiction systems with specific applications such as hand-hold wireless devices, space telecommunication subsystems, etc. it is important to have highly reliable, efficient, small-sized systems, given the limited input power source (generally battery), attaining desirable output power level and gain. The aim of this thesis is designing Class-E and Inverse-Class-E power amplifier with low voltge consumption in UHF band with application in small satellites. One of the main properties of this design is being supplied with only 5V which will result in elimintating a DC-DC down-converter in the next stage of a system. To reach this aim, class-E structure has been selected in order to have maximum possible PAE and high gain with the available input power, and other design specifications which will be discussed and mentioned in details in the text. Besides, Inverse-Class-E structure and a novel mix of Class-E and Inverse-Class-E has also been designed and tested to compare the function of each structure. Suitable transistor (available in market) and active device technology has been selected, different input and output matching networks have been designed and examined, biasing network has been designed carefully, and satisfying results for the given design goals has been achieved. Advanced Design System 2015.01 (ADS) is the software used for the design and circuits prepared and tested in RF Electronics Laboratory of Istanbul Technical University. The challenges of this project was designing Class-E and Inverse-Class-E power amplifier, while having output matching circuit, maintaining design simplicity with low voltage which resulted in very limited choices in using lumped elements. Furthermore, using lumped passive elements transformation into transmission lines is not feasible in UHF band as the lines will be very long and it makes the implementations almost impossible. Therefore, transmission lines were used only between lumped passive elements to make connections. On the other hand, using lumped passive elements resulted in having a very lossy system, that for instance, a design with PAE=59% turned to PAE=44% after implementing real passive element models and transmission lines. The main point in designing Class-E and Inverse-Class-E power amplifier is selecting the right biasing point which is almost considered as deep class-AB biasing point and the main affecting part of system is the output matching network. Thus, different output matching networks have been designed and examined and the result is, the simpler the circuit becomes, the higher efficiency can be obtained. Simplicity and using least passive elements were key factors in this design due to using lossy passive element models and the frequency domain. In this project, GaAs technology has been selected and ATF-511P8 is the active device, from Avago Technologies manufacturer. Process of input and output matching network designs has been presented in appendix .Three designes for Class-E, Inverse-Class-E and mixture of Class-E and Inverse-Class-E has been designed, fabricated and tested. Results indicated the importance of keeping simplicity of design, while satisfying design goals. On the other hand, superiority of functionality for Class-E power amplifier has been proved by having higher PAE than the other two designs. Novelty of this project is using a mixture of Class-E and Inverse-Class-E power amplifier which has been designed and tested for the first time. 1mm thickness standart RF4 substrate is preferred due to durable structure and low cost. According to our previous cube-satellite experiences, it is suitable for low-Earth-orbit (LEO) conditions. Very few references was found about Inverse-Class-E which shows how implementation of this structure is hard, and not ideally practical. Thus, part of the thesis concentrates on desiging and implementation of this structure. Furthermore, a mixture of Class-E and Inverse-Class-E including series inductance, shunt capacitance and parallel-tuned circuit in the output matching network has been designed, manufactured and tested for the first time. This will give an insight to a new structure for power amplifiers and can be further improved for future works. Simulated PAEs of Class-E, mixed strucure and Inverse-Class-E designs are 50%, 43% and 37% respectively. Measuremed gain, PAE and output power are slightly different than simulated values. In simulations, higher output power and gain but lower PAE was achieved while in measurements it was vice versa. It is impartant to mention that the mixed design was manufactured for two values of inductors 49nH and 56nH and each of them was measured separately. Measurement PAEs are 35% for Class-E, 40% for Inverse-Class-E, 57% for Mixed Design with 47nH and 37% for Mixed Design with 56nH. All results are presented in detailed at last chapter. Desinged GaAs amplifiers are suitable for cube-satellite UHF band transmitters due to small size and low voltage stable operation. In a standard cube-satellite, they can be used without an additional DC-DC convertor.
Through-the-wall microwave imaging with sampling methods
Microwave imaging is a promising technology and basically aims to retrieve electrical parameters such as permittivity and conductivity of the unapproachable objects with their shape and location. Microwave imaging systems extract information of materials by processing their scattered electric field data or scattering parameters. Due to non ionized characteristic of microwaves, they harmlessly penetrate to human body parts. This feature allows microwaves to find numerous applications in medical imaging. Alongside medical applications, microwave imaging applications also include through the wall imaging, subsurface imaging, non destructive testing and concealed weapon detection. The problem in microwave imaging separates into two groups direct and inverse problems. In electromagnetics, in direct problem the scattered field is calculated by knowing features of scatterers. Mostly the scattered field cannot be calculated analytically, numerical methods such as physical optics, modal techniques or integral equation methods must be performed for this purpose. On the other hand, in inverse problems, characteristics of scatterers are unknown and these parameters are reconstructed by set of measured scattered field outside the investigated domain. Countless inversion methods which are split into two parts, namely qualitative and quantitative methods, are developed for performing inversion. Qualitative methods include but not limited to linear sampling method, factorization method, orthogonality sampling method and singular sources method. The methods in that category aim to reconstruct shape and location of scatterers very fast with respect to other counterparts. Despite qualitative methods, quantitative methods retrieve electrical parameters of objects in investigated domain by minimizing the cost function. The most well known quantitative methods are Born iterative method, distorted Born iterative method and contrast source inversion method. The initial value of contrast must be find for these methods, Born approximation and back propagation are applied for this purpose. The thesis under study considers through the wall microwave imaging application. In the first part of the thesis, steps to solve direct problem are introduced. The derivation of Green's function of the wall is developed analytically for homogeneous planar layered media. The wall considered as infinitely long and rectangular solid at two axes. The well established method of moments is used to calculate scattered electric field at a straight line. The illumination is done by Hertzian electric dipoles in front of the wall and multi frequency case is considered. Secondly, two of qualitative inversion algorithms, namely linear sampling and factorization methods are presented with their explicit formulations. These methods are highly ill posed and regularization techniques must be implemented for finding approximate solution of real problem. Linear sampling and factorization methods are applied to different scenarios. Perfect electric conductor and dielectric scatterers are involved in simulation setups. The reconstruction process is performed by using proper Green's function. The comparison of linear sampling and factorization methods can be seen from numerical results and also their achievements in through the wall imaging can be clearly commented.
Joint server and route selection in SDN networks
The key computing trends driving the need for a new networking paradigm include evolving traffic characteristics with the rise of mobile and cloud services, network function virtualization, the need for more capacity, and the trend of building networks without vendor dependence. The SDN architecture, by decoupling data and control planes and using a centralized controller, provides network managers with the flexibility of configuring, managing, and securing network resources dynamically and in an automated fashion. With the support of SDN tools, network resources can be utilized efficiently, evolving business needs can be addressed timely, and higher transmission capacity can be achieved. The current operational networks do not have enough flexibility in terms of managing how available network resources can be efficiently utilized since data and control plane functions are coupled and networking functions are highly distributed. A traditional network management tool might be considered as a central controller; however, its operations would be restricted by the networking protocols of the underlying OSI layers. In the SDN architecture, data forwarding and control planes are decoupled, and hence, it becomes feasible to utilize logically centralized controller for intelligent network management decisions. This approach is directly applicable for small size regional networks, data center networking, and the core network of a cellular wireless communication system. In the SDN architecture, SDN enabled switches, which can be managed by a centralized controller, are used instead of standard network equipment. SDN networks are vendor independent since information exchange between switches and the controller is provided by a standardized interface. OpenFlow is the first standard communication interface defined between control and forwarding layers of SDN. OpenFlow allows direct access to SDN enabled switches for information retrieval and configuration purposes. The SDN controller software can manage the underlying network either statically or dynamically and uses the flow concept of OpenFlow to identify network traffic based on matching rules. Managing the network on a per flow basis provides a fine granular resource control and timely response to network changes. Intelligently routing flows using a centralized controller with network-wide state information is expected to provide significant performance improvements in terms of throughput, delay, and packet loss. These improvements are particularly important to support new real-time services with stringent quality of service requirements. However, the timely detection of congestion and failure events and re-routing traffic without causing any oscillation are challenging tasks. The SDN technology with a centralized controller is suitable for tackling these problems. Although a programmable centralized controller gives flexibility in flow management; it is a challenging task when the network size is large and there are many flows with various priority levels. In the traditional SDN approach, the forwarding decisions are performed using the traditional shortest path algorithm running in the SDN controller. Therefore, the packets are forwarded over the shortest path by data plane elements (i.e., OpenFlow switches) without considering link utilization levels. This situation may cause bottlenecks on certain links while there might be under-utilized links in other parts of the network. In this thesis, a joint server and route selection mechanism is presented for SDN networks. OpenFlow enabled architecture takes current and past network statistics into account and routes an incoming flow over under-utilized server and links to evenly distribute traffic among the network resources. The main objective is to use the current and past knowledge of the network so that a better resource allocation decision can be made by considering both current and future times. The proposed algorithm uses a cost function to periodically and automatically modify link weights of link state routing protocols using current and past network statistics such as traffic and packet loss rates. There are functionally equivalent multiple servers in the network and the server utilization statistics are also used in the overall cost calculation for joint server and route selection. When a new traffic flow is arrived, the proposed algorithm intelligently selects the server and routing path by using the overall cost calculation of the algorithm. Finally, new routes corresponding to the minimum cost are installed into OpenFlow enabled switches. New SDN applications are developed to implement the proposed traffic engineering (TE) mechanism. These applications communicate with the network using the controller (controller APIs and network service functions) for collecting statistics and re-configuring switches. Custom database (DB) is used to store collected information. The proof of concept has been implemented using Mininet to emulate OpenFlow enabled switches and OpenDaylight as an SDN controller. The demonstration results indicate that the proposed mechanism can evenly distribute traffic among the links and servers and avoid congestion in the network.
Full-duplex wireless communication systems: Design and performance analyses
Full-Duplex (FD) communications allows receiving and transmitting the signal at the same time interval using the same frequency band, hence it theoretically doubles the capacity, improves the spectral efficiency and reduces end-to-end delay with respect to the conventional half-duplex (HD) communications. Although FD transmission causes strong loop-interference (LI) at the receive antenna, the recent developments on antenna technology and signal processing techniques make it feasible by applying LI cancellation techniques. According to the experimental and theoretical studies in the literature, FD transmission can outperform its counterpart HD transmission, even though the LI cannot be removed completely. Hence, FD communications has recently gained great attention as a potential candidate technology for the next generation wireless communication systems. In this thesis, a variety of wireless communication systems using FD transmission are designed and analyzed. The outage probability or bit error rate (BER) expressions of the proposed systems are analytically derived. The accuracy of the theoretical analyses for each system is verified by several Monte Carlo type computer simulation results.
Logic synthesis and power-delay-area modeling of nano-crossbar arrays
Self-assembled nano-crossbar arrays is one of the strong candidate for post-CMOS technology; due to its cheap and fast fabrication process on nano scale. However it needs to be researched on some topics; such as lack of logic synthesis methods and performance model. In this work, we have studied nano-arrays from different angles. Main parts of the the study are: "Logic synthesis" and "Performance Modeling". Although we have revealed most of the characteristics of the nanoarrays, there are many topics on this to study. In this work, we introduce an accurate capacitor-resistor model for nano-crossbar arrays that is to be used for power/delay/area performance analysis and optimization. Although the proposed model is technology independent, we explicitly show its applicability for three different nanoarray technologies where each crosspoint behaves as a diode, a FET, and a four-terminal switch. In order to find related capacitor and resistor values, we investigate upper/lower value limits for technology dependent parameters including doping concentration, nanowire dimension, pitch size, and layer thickness. Comparison between the proposed model and a conventional simple one, which generally uses one/two capacitors for each crosspoint, demonstrates the necessity of using our model in order to accurately calculate power and delay values. The only exception where both models give approximately same results is the presence of considerably low valued resistive connections between switches. However, we show that this is a rare case for nano-crossbar technologies. After observing that performance of nano-crossbar arrays are sufficient, we study implementation of Boolean functions with crossbar nanoarrays where each crosspoint behaves as a switch. This part of the study has three main subparts "synthesis" "mathematical model" and "optimization". In the first sub-part "synthesis", we investigate nanoarray based implementation methodologies in the literature. We classify them as two-terminal or four-terminal switch based. We generalize these methodologies to be applicable for any given Boolean function by offering array size formulations. In the second sub-part "mathematical model", we have revealed the mathematical representation of four-terminal raw arrays. By doing that optimization could be turn into boolean satisfiability problem. In the third sub-part "optimization", we focus on four-terminal switch based implementations; we propose a synthesis method to implement Boolean functions with optimal array sizes. Finally, we perform synthesis trials on standard benchmark circuits to evaluate the proposed optimal method in comparison with previous nanoarray based implementation methods. The proposed synthesis method gives by far the smallest array sizes and offers a new design paradigm for nanoarray based computing architectures. Furhermore, we have also fixed "claimed" fastest optimization algorithm in the literature and compared the results.
Detection of human vital signs through obstructive barriers using UWB GPR
This thesis involves detection of human vital signs detected through obstructive barriers using UWB GPR systems. After a short introduction and background, radar and ground penetrating radar(GPR) principles, clutter reduction techniques and signal processing algorithms for analysis of human vital signs in frequency spectrum are discussed. Radar emits radio waves through media, and back-scattered waves from objects are collected using various antenna types. Radar systems basically consist of a radar device to generate radio signals, antennas for transmission and reception, and computers for recording and processing data. History of radar goes back to World War II. Today's radar systems are widely used both in civil and defense industry. Detection of hazardous fields in enemy territory and monitoring of ships and planes are some of the uses. In civil life, radar systems can be used in traffic system and weather forecast. Ground Penetrating Radar or shortly GPR is technique among radar systems that uses radio waves through ground to detect buried pipes, mines or buried objects. GPR mostly uses pulse technique to generate radio signals. Ground types such as soil, moist soil, and rocky fields represent different attenuation characteristics. Thus, type of ground, thickness of material, and depth are important parameters for object imaging and detection. Ultra-wideband(UWB) systems are modern high gain&resolution techniques applied to radar systems. High resolution is provided by wide band-width. Plus, fast data speed, target recognition capability and reduced radar dead zones make those systems attractive for detection objects through walls and/or under rubble. Detection of human vital signs, such as, respiratory rate and heart beat through obstacles are a hot topic for research related to rescue operations after natural disasters, such as earthquakes. Such techniques may also make possible remote (non contact) monitoring of vital signs of patients in a hospital environment. Continuous observation of vital signs are important because most signals in human body are by nature continuous. A portable radar device which detects human vital signs under collapsed buildings and rubble can become life saving. Target recognition capability, high gain and wide bandwidth makes UWB systems excellent candidate to detect human vital signs through wall or under debris. Currently, UWB GPR systems are used for such purposes. Human respiratory motion carries characteristic information and its frequency is between 0,2 Hz and 0,5 Hz. During breathing lungs expand and contract. These expansions and contractions lead to small displacements in chest cavity. These tiny displacements can be detected using UWB GPR systems. Signal processing algorithms are crucial for accurate detection. Background subtraction and signal localization play a big role in data analysis. Clutter type and thickness of clutter makes the environment more complex. Suppression of clutter is essential. Frame Differencing, Principal Component Analysis and Singular Value Decomposition Techniques are well known algorithms for background elimination. Analysis of human vital signs in frequency domain can be performed with conventional transform techniques, like Fast Fourier Transform, but such analyses may also be carried out with modern techniques. Wavelet Transform and Hilbert Huang Transform are the latest techniques for data interpretation. Hilbert Huang Transform is composed of Hilbert Transform and Empirical Mode Decomposition algorithm. This technique is effective on both non-linear and non-stationary data analysis. Also, the method is adaptive and local. In this study, a UWB GPR system is designed for detection of human vital signs through obstacles. After successful data acquisition, signal processing algorithms are explained in two sections. First one is background subtraction techniques to eliminate obstacle effect. The last one is signal localization algorithms and covers Hilbert Huang Transform and Fast Fourier Transform. Finally, results will be presented and conclusions drawn.
Next generation physical layer security framework for wireless communications
Physical layer security became a very popular topic as new wireless technologies emerged and started to take over the major share of modern communication systems. The wireless communication networks use the unguided medium as the channel, which leads to the security vulnerability caused by the broadcast nature of the medium. Solving the problem of this vulnerability in the physical layer of wireless systems still remains a challenge. Current technologies use other solutions such as encryption to address the vulnerability of wireless physical layer. However, with the development of multilayer antennas, it became possible to address this issue in physical layer for the future systems. Thus, there have been many techniques proposed, which optimize the physical layer parameters to supplement the current security systems. However these methods are all stand-alone solutions, in other words they do not collaborate with other systems. This phenomenon makes them additional, and in most cases, optional. Hence, it is important to develop a new, unified physical layer security framework with increased awareness and adaptiveness. This way, implementing physical layer security can add real value to the system, especially when it is most needed. In this thesis, a new type of physical layer framework is proposed which combines the physical layer security techniques with multilayer awareness. The framework has the core modules, which calculate the system parameters using the inputs coming from enabled modules and transmits the signals. Each optional module add a new type of comprehension ability to the system. As the framework controls the transmission parameters, it is likely to be implemented within a wireless transmitter node. Therefore, it is named as the new-generation physical layer security framework. The new-generation framework has three major design features, namely flexibility, energy efficiency and adjustable security. The modular structure makes it tailorable so that the framework can support many applications and future technologies. The main purpose of the system is to optimize the transmission parameters to maintain successful legitimate communication while guaranteeing a predefined secrecy level, with the minimum power. The objective of minimizing power consumption is crucial for especially mobile devices, as their battery resources are limited. Lastly, the adjustable security provides a new level of efficiency to the system, where the system can differentiate between the input bits and provide better security for the important ones. The differentiation can be adjusted by the configuration of the modules and it is the main reason why the proposed method is more power efficient than the conventional physical layer systems. The following modules are described for the proposed next-generation framework. Core module, which consists of centralized computing module, beamforming and artificial noise modules, is responsible for the main functions of the system. This module itself acts like a basic physical layer security system, which is not aware of upper layer properties of the incoming stream. The encryption awareness module provides the detection of encryption method that is used in the system. The encryption methods change the physical layer properties of the system, hence the computing module adjusts the optimization accordingly and have a more accurate output. Also, it can change the encryption type or key length of the system to support the most power efficient solution. Application awareness module differentiates the incoming bits regarding their application-wise importance. This way, it becomes possible to differentiate the bits which are important such as a password in a HTTP GET or POST message. Also it can be used to assess and change the security requirement of the bits, for example it is possible to assign a higher security level for HTTP and lower level for HTTPS traffic. Channel estimation protection module provides information about the channel estimation error so that the core computing mode adjusts the thresholds to make sure the constraints will be met by investing more power. The module provides a higher reliability, which is very important for the real-life implementations. An arbitrary module can be added to the framework, which differentiates the bits. This may be required for integrating future protocols. The thesis provides an exemplary configuration sample for such an addition. The concept has been implemented in different scenarios. First, the spatiotemporal selective artificial noise scenario is considered. Here, the artificial noise has been designed as selective in the spatial (as in beamforming) and temporal (time selective) domains. The performance analysis showed that the spatioselective artificial noise can be more efficient than the existing isotropic artificial noise and space selective artificial noise scenarios. In the second scenario, channel estimation error protection was introduced for the artificial aided beamforming system. Threshold calculation was proposed in order to maintain the constraints with the minimal power, under the existence of channel estimation errors. The results show that the system can stay reliable with the assistance of a threshold, which comes with the prise of increased power consumption. In the third scenario, the encryption awareness was considered. In this scenario, the effects of using different encryption schemes, namely AES, DES and DESX are examined. Afterwards, the results for the framework with encryption awareness are given. Encryption changes the error properties of the system, e.g. one bit error on the encrypted stream cause multiple errors on the decrypted stream. If the system is encrypted, the number of errors between transmitter and receiver is not equal to the number of errors between encrypted and decrypted stream, which is referred to as the effective channel. Hence, the effective channel should be considered for accuracy. The results conclude that the encryption awareness brings enhanced power efficiency for the encrypted systems by preventing the power consumption caused by unnecessary use of artificial noise. In forth scenario, the application awareness is examined. The system has the application aware security feature, where only a specified part of video traffic is secured. The results show that the application awareness can selectively enhance security on important bits, and achieve higher efficiency by not wasting power on unimportant bits. The full duplex case is considered in the fifth scenario, where the legitimate nodes operate in full duplex mode and employ self interference cancellation. The fact that both nodes send information signals in full duplex communication, creates interference on the potential eavesdropper nodes. The results show that the same secrecy level can be achieved by the systems when the nodes operate in full duplex node. The effect of imperfect self interference cancellation is also shown. In the sixth scenario, the cognitive radio network application is employed. The most important physical layer attacks in cognitive radio networks are examined and beamforming based attack prevention is performed. The results show that the physical layer security methods can be employed as countermeasure to specific attacks, other than eavesdropping. In conclusion, this thesis proposes a physical layer security framework, which is called "next generation physical layer security framework" due to its modular and multilayer operating properties. The modules of the framework increase the power efficiency of the system, by bringing more intelligence for smarter handling of power invested to increase security. These modules are implemented on different scenarios and are shown to be successful in increasing efficiency. The framework can be implemented for different use cases with existing and also new modules, which can be added to the framework.
5G waveform design and software defined radio based proof of concept implementations
Communication engineering field is a rapidly advancing field where related systems are served to high number of users and demand on these systems brings new challenges. Especially for mobile communications, communication resources are becoming more and more limited. There are efforts in communication engineering field to meet the requirements. However, because of the speed of the increase in the number of users and integration with various new sectors, these efforts seem ineffective. Particularly with the new trends arising from novel 5G studies, in addition to overcoming the limitations, significant improvements in communication quality are also becoming a necessity. With these targets, it is visioned that crucial data which has a financial importance, will be transmitted over mobile networks with the development of 5G. This fact brings additional challenges, especially from the security perspective. All these facts are investigated in this thesis and are analyzed separately in the following chapters. In Chapter 1, the importance of the scope of this thesis is highlighted and the main components of the chapters are explained. In Chapter 2, an introduction on the utilized methodology and software defined radio (SDR) technology is given. Considered topics in the scope of this thesis are novel topics and have an importance in 5G studies. Hence, compared to the state-of-the-art, real-time performance analysis becomes a must since current communication environment has some difficulties in the real-time channel. Most of the models may perform very deteriorated in such conditions and such performance loss can be enhanced with a proper real-time analysis. By targeting this, SDR technology is utilized in our studies in order to analyze their real-time performance. With the help of SDRs, experiments can be carried on in a way that symbols can be transmitted from transmitter to receiver nodes over the air. Implementation aspects of our studies are also explained. In Chapter 3, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique is investigated and its real-time performance results are presented. To the best of authors' knowledge, first comprehensive SDR implementation of NOMA is realized in this study with broad real-time components. Moreover, a novel waveform is proposed in this study, which is entitled as superposition coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (SC-OFDM). Accordingly, proposed waveform has a certain performance advantage over standard OFDM. With detailed experiments, this claim is validated and details are given in the chapter. In Chapter 4, universal filtered multi-carrier (UFMC) waveform, which is an important waveform candidate for 5G networks, is implemented in real-time for the first time in the literature. Its main details, proposed additional methods and implementation aspects are explained. Then in Chapter 5, UFMC waveform is further investigated and four novel waveforms which are UFMC variations, are proposed. Precoding and single-carrier methodologies are exploited and detailed experiments are carried out. Related details are explained in this chapter. In Chapter 6, physical layer security (PLS) is evaluated and corresponding details are demonstrated. As mentioned, security of the transmitted data increases with new applications and proper methodologies are required. Accordingly, PLS is a leading candidate for next-generation networks and brings various benefits. In this study, a PLS scenario is modeled and the corresponding details are investigated. With experiments, it is shown that PLS models can be effective in the improvement of security levels. As the last chapter, thesis is summarized and main points are highlighted in Chapter 7.
A 0.18 µm CMOS X-band low noise amplifier for space applications
Low noise amplifiers are the first and one of the most important stages of receiver systems. They are RF circuits which are widely used in many applications such as wireless systems, radio astronomy, space communications etc. Their main purpose is to amplify the weak signal at the input of the receiver by adding as little noise as possible. Since, LNAs constitute the first stage of receivers, they dominate the overall noise performance of the system. Low noise amplifier designs are mostly done using SiGe and HEMT technologies. However, low cost and better process integration of CMOS technology along with its rapidly increasing performance metrics has made it a significant contender. Mankind is exploring the space by satellites, telescopes and space crafts. These expeditions need strong support of electronics technology. Space electronics has evolved considerably over the years, however designs accomplished mostly depend on discrete elements and expensive technologies such as High Electronic Mobility Transistor (HEMT). As the space technology should get more important and prevalent in the foreseeable future, related applications require cheap, wide-spread and easily (re)producible technologies. Temperature in the outer world can get as low as 77 K and objects in space are under high radiation doses emitted by the stars and planets. Low temperature and high radiation affect the circuit performance drastically. Thus, developing designs for these extreme environments with cheap technologies is an important research problem. The main goal of this thesis is to design a 7 GHz X-band low noise amplifier for space applications using 0.18 µm UMC CMOS Mixed-Mode/RF technology. This LNA is designed for being tested at temperatures below 100 K (also called cryogenic temperatures) and radiation. Designed LNA is still at the production stage and has not been measured yet. All the results in this thesis are post-layout simulation results from Cadence and ADS tools. The classical cascode topology with inductive degeneration is used in this design. An additional bias inductance is employed to help in input impedance matching. Bias of the LNA is designated to be directly applied to the pads so that they can be changed during measurements to comply with cryogenic temperatures and radiation. Designed CMOS LNA achieves a voltage gain higher than 15 dB, 2.6 dB noise figure, –2.24 dBm IIP3 while consuming 25 mW of power.
Design and performance analysis of diversity schemes for spatial modulation and space shift keying systems
Novel single radio-frequency (RF) chain spatial modulation (SM) and space shift keying (SSK) systems are proposed as an alternative to conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In this thesis work, advanced SM/SSK systems are proposed and the performance of these systems is investigated and the advantages against the conventional MIMO systems are demonstrated. In this study, at first, the outage performance of point-to-point MIMO scheme combining SM with transmit antenna selection (TAS) is investigated in Nakagami-m channels for arbitrary m values. In this scheme, transmit antennas which maximize capacity of the system are selected for transmission and then SM is applied by using the selected transmit antennas. For this system, probability density function (PDF) of the received signal-to-noise ratio is derived and then, a closed-form expression for the outage probability of the system is derived by using this PDF. The asymptotic diversity analysis is also performed to demonstrate the achieved diversity order of the system. It is shown that outage performance of the system is improved when fading parameter m and/or number of transmit antennas increase. The derived analytical results are validated by Monte Carlo simulations. Besides the investigation of SM with TAS in Nakagami-m fading channels, due to its simplicity, good performance and low complexity, SSK is considered in the proposed schemes at the rest of the thesis. In this context, cooperative MIMO schemes combining SSK with TAS and relay selection, respectively, are proposed. In the cooperative MIMO scheme combining SSK with TAS, source transmit antennas are selected based on the Euclidean distances between source and destination channel fading coefficients. SSK is applied by using the selected transmit antennas. Besides the direct link transmission between source and destination, the relays which decode the signal transmitted from the source correctly, take part in the transmission. Exact expression and tight lower bound for symbol error rate (SER) of the proposed SSK system with TAS and cooperative relays are derived when the number of selected antennas is two and an arbitrary integer power of two, respectively. Moreover, an asymptotic diversity analysis for SER of the system is also performed to demonstrate the achievable diversity order of the system. It is shown that the proposed SSK system with TAS outperforms SSK system without TAS. It is also indicated that the proposed SSK system with TAS outperforms the conventional MIMO system, which employs antenna selection at source, for high data rates and sufficient number of receive antennas. On the other hand, in the cooperative MIMO scheme combining SSK with relay selection, SSK transmission is considered by using the source transmit antennas. In addition to the direct link transmission, a relay, which is selected according to partial relay selection technique, amplifies the data received from the source and forwards it to the destination. An exact and considerably accurate upper-bound expression for the average error probability of the proposed cooperative SSK system with relay selection are derived when the number of source transmit antennas is equal to two and an arbitrary integer power of two, respectively. An asymptotic diversity analysis is also performed to demonstrate the achievable diversity orders of the systems. It is shown that the proposed SSK system with partial relay selection outperforms the conventional cooperative single-input multiple-output (SIMO) system with partial relay selection. At the last chapter of the thesis, the performance of SSK modulation in multi-hop relay networks is investigated. In this context, the SSK is studied in three different multi-hop relay schemes. In the first scheme, a multi-hop multi-branch SSK system with amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperative relays is proposed. A MIMO scheme, in which source and destination are equip with multiple transmit and receive antennas, respectively, is considered. In this scheme, SSK is applied using the source transmit antennas and the single-antenna AF relays are used to amplify and forward the transmitted signals from the source to the destination in each hop of each branch. A considerably accurate lower-bound expression on the pairwise error probability of multi-hop single-branch SSK system and approximate expression on the bit error probability of multi-hop multi-branch SSK system are derived for the cases that numbers of transmit antennas are two and an arbitrary positive integer power of two at the source, respectively. It is shown that the proposed SSK system outperforms the classical single-input multiple-output systems for especially high data rates. The derived analytical results are validated by computer simulations. In the second scheme, SER analysis is performed for multi-hop SSK system with TAS. In this scheme, SSK is applied on the selected antennas at each hop. It is assumed that there is no line of sight transmission between source and destination and each receiving terminal decodes and forwards its received signal and maps the decided information bits to the selected antennas according to SSK modulation. For the proposed system, approximate and asymptotic SER expressions are derived and the theoretical results are verified by computer simulations. It is shown that the proposed system provides better error performance than the multi-hop SSK system without TAS, and it is also indicated that the proposed system outperforms conventional M-QAM system for especially high data rates and sufficient number of receive antennas at the destination. Finally, in the third scheme, a multi-hop decode-and-forward SSK system with path selection is proposed. In this scheme, the best path is selected among available multiple branches and source communicates with destination hop by hop through the relays of the selected path. SSK is applied by using source's and the relays' transmit antennas. Closed-form approximate and asymptotic SER expressions are derived for the proposed SSK system with path selection. Consequently, performance of the new proposed SM/SSK systems with diversity schemes is studied in this thesis. The advantages of SM/SSK systems with diversity schemes against the conventional MIMO systems are demonstrated. Moreover, analytical expressions corresponding to error probability of the proposed systems are derived. The derived analytical results are validated via comprehensive computer simulations.

Mikrodalga görüntüleme için menzil testi yöntemi
Microwave imaging is the imaging technology that utilizes the electromagnetic illumination at microwave frequency range to be able to remotely detect, sense or image the targeted objects located in some domain. Besides being a very popular and edge cutting technology of today's science, the microwave imaging attracts a lot attention due to its wide application areas ranging from nondestructive testing to military applications. The microwave imaging methods can be grouped into two main branches with respect to their aimed goals: qualitative microwave imaging techniques, quantitative microwave imaging methods. The latter group, quantitative microwave imaging methods, desires to estimate the electrical parameters of the targets in a host medium by means of the electromagnetic measurements realized at microwave frequency range whereas the first group of methods, qualitative microwave imaging techniques, aims only to estimate the shape and the position of targets hosted in a specific part of the space. The quantitative microwave imaging techniques is generally known with their higher demands, i.e. high computational cost, large computational space, longer computational times. On the other hand, the quantitative microwave imaging methods produces outputs of both the electrical parameters and the shape & locations of the targets, thus their potentials is higher. The qualitative microwave imaging techniques, which were developed in 1990s primarily by mathematicians, generally requires less computational space, efficient in computational cost and time. Giving outputs of the shape and location information, the qualitative microwave imaging techniques have a special importance due to their potentials in popular problems that is came across in today's microwave imaging technology. This thesis investigates the Range Test Method, which is one of the qualitative inversion algorithms developed by Potthast in 2000s. This method tests the scattered field with arbitrarily selected test domains for analytic extensibility on the selected domain. By doing so, the Range Test Method calculates the region to which the scattered field is analytically extensible. This region is called as the convex hull of the scattering targets and it is larger or equal to the exact support of the target. The advantages of the Range Test Method is in fact squeezing the investigation domain on which the quantitative methods searches for the exact shapes, locations and electrical properties of the targets. It is well known that the inverse scattering problem is severely ill-posed thus the initialization of the qualitative imaging methods is quite important to obtain accurate results. In this respect the Range Test Method can provide an important information, which is a squeezed region that encloses the scatterers, for accurate and efficient solution of the ill-posed inverse scattering problem.
New possibilities in the design of CMOS frequency agile filters
Telecommunication is widespread in all areas of society. Although digital signal processing emerges on analog counterpart, analog signal processing is an indispensable part of telecommunication. For example, analog filtering is one of the most important unavoidable function of transceiver architectures. Nowadays, the new telecommunication techniques have increased the importance of multi-standard transceivers to realize more flexible transmitters and receiver blocks. Multi standard transceivers increase the universality of the designed transceiver circuit for all applications to implement on a single chip. For example, for more convenience 4G cellular system transceivers must be suitable for more than one standard for best connectivity. GSM, GPS, WCDMA, Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n), WiMAX, Bluetooth, Zee Bee and Ultra Wideband (UWB), are certain prospective standards that can be considered as pieces in the circuit of the final wireless network. Some analog parts, especially band selection filter and oscillator of the multi-standard transceivers must be reconfigurable. The reconfigurable filter called as frequency agile filter is one of the background circuit multi-standard transceivers. The frequency agile filter allows to sense different protocols with only one circuit. Such a circuit can be a signal processing part of different positioning systems bands (GPS, Beidou, GNSS and Galileo) to process different positioning system protocols in the same circuit. Also, one of the most critical part of the Zero-IF receivers ABB is reconfigurable low pass filter. Furthermore, frequency agile filter can be considered as a part of frequency hopping system used in military applications for secure communication. Frequency hopping spread spectrum known as (FHSS) and direct-sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) are two types of encoding system. In FHSS transmission technology, the data signal is modulated with a narrowband carrier signal hopping arbitrarily frequency to frequency. The random modulation can be predictable by only the desired receivers. Instead of chopping each bit into small part, the signal energy is spread in time domain. The signal coming from narrowband system can only affect the spread spectrum signal in the case of the both signal transmitting at the same frequency at the same time. As a result of this technique, the interferences are reduced. The random hopping codes determine the transmission frequencies. The same random hopping code trigger the receiver to read the desired information. 75 or more frequencies per transmission channel with a maximum dwell time of 400ms are used by current FCC regulations. 400ms is the time spent at a particular frequency during any single hop. As a result, the frequency agile filters have great importance in the structure of multi-standard transceiver and the secure communications. The research about current-mode approach has been investigated in detail in the literature. Current mode circuits have some superior advantages compared to the voltage-mode circuits. Wide bandwidth, wide dynamic range and simple circuitry with lover voltage supplies are some advantages of current mode circuits. In this work, some circuits designed with current mode to profit its advantages and some circuits designed with voltage mode to take advantage of its advantages. The thesis is essentially composed of four different methods to design frequency agile filter. In the first method, frequency agile filter is designed with feedback technique. This method can be applicable to the conventional second order filters which has at least two outputs; low pass and band pass. The low pass output is fed back to the input by passing through a gain stage. This gain stage can be ECCII (Electronically Controllable Second Generation Current Conveyor), CCII (Second Generation Current Conveyor), CDTA (Current Differencing Trans conductance Amplifier) or etc., In this chapter, a new implementation of frequency agile filter based on CDTA and ECCII is presented. AMS 0.18µm technology is used to design the proposed circuits in this section. The designed circuits in this part is proposed for GPS protocols and Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS). In the second method; frequency agile filter is designed with MOS-Only technique. The frequency agile filter designed with MOS-Only circuit is firstly proposed in the concept of this thesis. The core of this design is constructed over the previous method. Because of that, the recommended MOS-Only circuit also must have at least low pass and band pass outputs. The most critical property of the MOS-Only circuit is that the low pass output must flow directly or indirectly to the input. TSMC 0.18µm technology is used to design the proposed circuits in this section. In the third method, two different VDTA (Voltage Differencing Transconductance Amplifier) based frequency agile filter circuits are recommended. This method can be classified as gm-C filter. The agility is realized by changing the transconductance or the capacitance of the filter. Second example of this method is realized with MOS-capacitance. The operations of the designed circuits at high frequencies are proved with post-layout simulations. The designed circuits in this part are proposed for HAVE QUICK. AMS 0.18µm technology is used to design the proposed circuits in this section. In the last method, a new method to design variable transconductance amplifier (VTA) is proposed. This new cell-based VTA is inspired from cell based variable gain amplifier. Furthermore, the CMOS implementation of the Operational Transconductance Amplifier is realized with this new VTA circuit. Two new reconfigurable Analog Baseband low pass filters for Zero-IF receivers are proposed by the aid of this new cell-based VTA structure. One of them operates voltage mode, the other operates current mode. The designed frequency agile filters can operate in large spectrum. Also, the operating frequency of the filter can support very low frequency (e.g. 20kHz) and high frequency (e.g. 50MHz) with low power dissipation. The design of these circuits are realized with TSMC 0.18µm technology. All circuit layout and post-layout simulations are realized in CADENCE environment. It is desirable that the designed circuits give new opportunities to the electronic designers.
A hill climbing algorithm with pre-processing and a column replication method for variation tolerant logic mapping problem
Nano-crossbar arrays are generally manufactured with faster and less costly methods than traditional tow-down lithography methods. However, due to very small device sizes, there is less control over these manufacturing processes. Therefore, crossbar arrays suffer from process variations and defects with considerably higher rates than lithography processes. This variations makes performance of any manufactured array unpredictable and worse than expected. As a result, variation and/or defect tolerant logic mapping algorithms needed to be developed for this problem. In this work, I focus on maximum delay increase due to process variations and focused on optimize this objective. Firstly, a matrix reducing method is proposed to achieve better runtimes for any variation tolerant logic mapping algorithm for the maximum delay optimization. In this method, we find columns which have very low (or no) probability to become the worst case on each performance test and reduce matrix bu deleting these columns. Deleted columns mapped randomly on final mapping. Note that this reducing method is algorithm independent, which means that it can be implemented on any variation tolerant logic mapping search algorithm with same performance criteria. As a variation tolerant logic mapping scheme, a Hill Climbing row search with column re-ordering (as restart points to search) algorithm is proposed. This method restarts Hill Climbing row search after reaching an unoptimizable point by re-ordering columns with data gathered on row search, until any of the stop criteria reached. Also, a greedy initial column ordering algorithm explained and matrix reducing method is applied to Hill Climbing algorithm as pre-processing phase. As an extension for our Hill Climbing algorithm on variance tolerance, we modeled variation tolerant logic mapping problem as defect tolerant logic mapping problem by adding defective crosspoints on array matrix and run our algorithm with these defects. Our algorithm successfully tolerate different defect rates for random matrices or benchmark circuits. Lastly, as a probabilistic approach by process parameters, a worst case route replication method is proposed. This method do not use any search algorithm or need any individual crosspoint characteristic testings, which are time and resource consuming processes. This approach uses area and power overhead as trade-off values, while power-delay product is generally having decreasing characteristics. We simulated all proposed algorithms and methods on Simulation Results Section. We explained some algorithms from the literature and compared our Hill Climbing with Column re-ordering algorithm with these. Our algorithm achieves performance outputs up to 15% and runtimes up to 150-400 times better than methods on the literature, depending on the array size. As a inspection of matrix reducing method, we applied this method on different benchmarks and algorithms to compare time optimization results. Up to 72% time improvement is achieved for certain benchmarks and different algorithms by this reducing approach. Our algorithm achieved 15-30% defect tolerance for random arrays with 40% crosspoint ratio and 5-20% defect tolerance for our benchmark set. We discuss to implement this methods for different nano-crossbar array types like diode or 4-terminal as future work. Also, we aim to improve presented algorithms since both matrix reducing and initial column mapping methods are in their preliminary states in this work.

Facial expression pair matching
Facial expression plays an important role in the social communication of people. Therefore, Facial Expression Recognition methods have been developed based on computer vision and machine learning techniques. Two types of datasets: controlled and uncontrolled datasets exist for facial expression recognition. Uncontrolled datasets are collected from everyday life images that include facial expressions, while controlled datasets are created from people acting out a facial expression or capturing their spontaneous facial expressions in controlled environments. The annotation of facial expression also requires excessive work even though images can be easily downloaded from the web for the creation of significant amount of uncontrolled dataset. Creating controlled datasets is challenging, hence, these datasets often contain fewer images, conversely. In order to address these problems: augmentation for small datasets and annotation for large datasets, we introduce a new pair matching problem for facial expression recognition. In this study, we are able to determine whether two facial expressions are the same or different without knowing any of the facial expressions. Thus, large datasets can be annotated by using the proposed method. In addition, by training a model from the pairs of a small dataset, and utilizing pair classification results, facial expressions can be recognized. The experimental results show that our pair matching formulation increased the facial expression recognition.
Visual object recognition and detection using deep learning
Visual object recognition problem is defined as the determination of the object inside an image file. With the advent of Deep Learning, learning a good, lower dimensional representation for the raw data is made possible with the use of deep architectures. Deep Belief Networks are proposed as a multi-layered probabilistic model where each layer is trained by maximizing the probability of the previous layer's output over the model distribution. Said approach corresponds to a greedy layer-wise unsupervised training procedure where the object representations are learned so that the data probability over the model is maximized. In the first part of the thesis, we worked on a sample object recognition application, specifically handwritten digit recognition. Handwritten digit recognition is a problem first emerged from the need to correctly recognize ZIP codes on the letters posted through U.S. Postal Service. While the recognition of single characters is a fairly well studied research field, it is an important part of any system used for generating text from an image containing handwriting. MNIST dataset is a specialized dataset collected for the task of handwritten digit recognition. Because MNIST provides researchers with a simple and well defined problem, it is widely used as a benchmark for Machine Learning algorithms. Overfitting of the model to the training data is also a problem of deep architectures as well as classical Machine Learning approaches. To prevent overfitting and generate generalizable models, regularization is introduced to the optimization procedure in the training. Regularization is used as a powerfull tool to avoid overfitting the complex structures in the training data which might not be present in unobserved data samples. Regularization can also be seen as a tool to impose a prior on the representation model in a Bayesian sense. We propose a Clique Potential regularization which is form of morphological constraints on the connections between a Restricted Boltzmann Machine. If the input data is an image, the connections between layers can also be viewed as images. Clique Potential regularization puts costs to not connected neighbours so that the features learned will be sparse and noise free. Introducing a regularization to the model also presents us with the challenge of determining a hyperparameter for said regularization. Selecting a hyperparameter is also defined as an optimization problem where evaluating the objective function is computationally costly, because it requires a full training cycle to observe the effects of the hyperparameter selection. We employ Bayesian optimization to select the hyperparameter of the regularization. Bayesian optimization methods are used in literature to optimize costly black-box objective functions with minimum number of evaluations, as they model the objective function and decide the next point to evaluate based on the expected gain of the input space. The hyperparameters of Bayesian optimization is marginalized to procure a parameter-free method. In the first part of the thesis, performance of the system is evaluated based on the classification error over the test data. Deep Belief Network (DBN) architecture with no regularizations achieves 1.57\% test error, while DBN with a 4 neighbourhood Clique Potential regularization gives the result of 1.49\% test error. 4 neighbourhood Clique Potential regularization results with features that is noise free and more sparse. $l_1$ and $l_2$ regularizations both generate 1.46\% classification error on the test set. $l_1$ regularization pushes most of the weights towards zero, therefore generate a more sparse representation. $l_2$ regularization punishes the weights with higher absolute values more aggressively, so the noise in the uniform gray level regions is not effected by $l_2$. Visual object detection is the problem of determining the location and the type of, possibly multiple, objects inside an image. For the second part of this thesis, we worked on Faster R-CNN method, which is the current state-of-the-art method for visual object detection, to generate a detection model for VOT2016 object tracking challenge where different objects required to be tracked in different videos. A custom dataset is created by using publicly available datasets to cover classes required for VOT2016 challenge. Overall system performance is measured by using mean average precision metric employed by COCO challenge. %Overall system performance was observed as 27\% according to mean average precision metric defined by COCO dataset, and 48.6\% according to average precision metric used by Pascal VOC dataset.
Moving object tracking by regularization via sparsity in wide area aerial video
Recently, the field of object tracking is drawing increasingly more attraction of numerous researchers around the world. Object tracking is the process of estimating location of an object or multiple objects over a video sequence elapsing for an amount of time. The task of object tracking accompanied with some challenging problems such as occlusion, illumination change, high motion, pose and scale variations becomes even more challenging when wide area aerial video sequences are the case. This is because the target object shot at a long distance by an aerial vehicle is represented with a few pixels. The increasing need and demand for video surveillance using wide area aerial video sequences, for instance for traffic monitoring, security and surveillance or environmental analysis necessitates dealing with these problems. In the context of this thesis, the problem of object tracking in wide area aerial video is handled by developing a method that utilizes a target update scheme. The proposed model is based on regularization via sparsity-based conditional density propagation. The regularization task is carried out through sparse representation of the possible target candidates and approximating the best target candidate with minimal reconstruction error recursively with respect of the philosophy of conditional density propagation, particle filtering. The target candidates are propagated through the frames via estimated affine transformation parameters that constitute the state vector. The use of the particle filtering via sparse target representations already exists in the literature. In these methods, the approximation of the best target candidate is achieved by representation of each target candidate in the linear span of a fixed or slowly-updating target template set plus a trivial template set and selecting the target candidate with the smallest reconstruction error as the tracking result after deriving the template coefficients through l1 minimization. The process is recursively repeated in the upcoming frames. Our major contribution to this system is the integration of a monitoring system that allows the tracker to automatically perceive anomalies thus update the observation model. Specifically, this is achieved by monitoring the tracking dependent on the model parameters that include minimum reconstruction error after approximation of the target candidates in the current frame, the magnitude of domination of the coefficients of trivial templates over the coefficients of target templates approximated through l1 minimization and the number of particles used in l1 minimization. Subsequent to the approximation via l1 minimization in the current frame, if an anomaly implying divergence from the target object is not detected, the tracking task keeps on moving using the current target template set without an interruption. Whenever an anomaly is reported by the tracker, a detection of target object is expected to be received from the object detector, which is a deep learning network in our model. In our work, because of its excellent object localization capability, Faster R-CNN is employed as the object detector. Once an object detection information is received, a new target template set is generated and the tracking task is resumed with the updated target template set. Unlike the existing models which continuously track, the capability of quiting tracking avoids the tracker from diverging that increase the robustness to occlusion where the target object extrudes from scene. Also, the update of the target template set upon a detection information from the detector makes the tracker more robust to high motion, because the target template set is refreshed with a more recent appearance of the target object. In order to avoid false alarms, the fulfillment of target update on time is vital. In order to achieve this, the proposed monitoring system is designed to be stimulated by analyzing the model parameters retrospectively over time. The experiments are performed using the datasets VIVID and UAV123 which include wide area aerial videos. Commonly used evaluation metrics including success rate, precision rate and center location error are used to report the object tracking performance. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed target tracking scheme integrated with the object detector based on faster R-CNN significantly improves the accuracy, compared to the baseline l1 tracker and other state-of-the-art trackers.
Dynamic optimization of radio resource management in LTE-based high-speed railway wireless networks
High-speed railway (HSR) has been deployed worldwide as the dominant fast public transportation system. HSR infrastructure features an increasing amount of control and multimedia transmissions to ensure the safety and efficiency of the transportation, and to support the increasing demand from passengers for the Internet services. Since GSM-R offers limited data transmission capabilities and inefficient radio resource usage, alternative communication systems should be investigated to support the increasing traffic demand. Therefore, the deployment of wideband wireless communication technologies is an urgent need for the operation of HSR to provide reliable and robust connection with the central control systems, and to offer seamless Internet access for passengers. LTE is envisioned as the leading candidate to replace GSM-R for the future railway infrastructures due to its packet-switched network architecture with high data transmission capacities and low latency. The increasing amount of wireless traffic in HSR necessitates the development of radio resource management (RRM) techniques to enable the efficient resource utilization. However, the design of such techniques is quite challenging due to the very dynamic channel conditions between the fast moving train and base stations, and the operational and passenger services with heterogeneous QoS requirements. RRM techniques for HSR wireless networks should jointly optimize the different aspects of resource allocation, admission and power control while observing different network constraints to enhance the system performance. This optimization should be performed in a cross-layer manner by considering the distinctive parameters and constraints stemmed from different network layers. Furthermore, it should manage the inherent trade-offs between these layers in a comprehensive close-to-optimal manner. In the light of the above, this work presents a delay-aware optimization framework which exploits the cross-layer design methodology and optimizes the resource allocation, admission and power control in LTE-based HSR wireless networks. The proposed framework extends previous works in literature by introducing an additional delay constraint to the dynamic network management of HSR infrastructure, and, hence, maximizing the throughput performance of the network while jointly optimizing the aforementioned aspects. The proposed scheme maximizes system utility under the constraints of average delay, queue stability and average power by formulating a joint stochastic problem which is transformed into a queue stability problem. Using Lyapunov drift theory, the queue stability problem is decomposed into separate convex subproblems. Golden section search method is used to achieve a globally optimal solution for the resource allocation subproblem. Then, a distributed dynamic resource management technique is proposed, and its performance is evaluated under realistic conditions for HSR wireless networks. Numerical simulations is performed on MATLAB and the results show that the proposed approach provides an improved throughput performance and enhanced link capacity, while satisfying the average delay requirements.
The modeling and simulation of intersatellite laser communication systems
Free Space Optical (FSO) Communication Systems are alternatives to Radio Frequency (RF) communication systems due to the high data rate, high bandwidth capacity, smaller size, and weight, less power consumption, high security, resistance to interference etc. There are many manufactured satellites orbiting around the earth and RF technique, which is a conventional communication method for satellite systems, is used in order for them to communicate with each other. It is possible to send several Gbps data to thousands kilometers distances with laser communication. This is done by means of adopting optical wireless communication technology into space technology; hence, intersatellite optical wireless communication is developed. In this thesis, detailed literature survey about free space optical communication system has been done. The importance of laser systems for free-space communication has been discussed and the status of laser techniques for intersatellite communication has been examined. The functions of the each basic component such as laser source, photodetector, modulation type, telescope used in a typical system have been examined. The intersatellite link has been modeled and simulated by means of Optiwave Software for the various link configurations and the system performance (BER/Q-Factor) has also been analyzed in terms of each basic parameter such as transmitted power, wavelength, data rate, range and telescope diameter in order to achieve minimum BER. APD type and PIN type photodetector comparison has been performed. Moreover, Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) has been used for the intersatellite link to recognize its effect on the link quality. It has been shown that communication performance of the system can be improved by choosing the most appropriate component in terms of communication requirements. Key Words: Intersatellite Laser Communication, Free Space Optical Communication, Optical Wireless Channel, Bit Error Rate, Q Factor.
