Benefits of film adaptations of literary works for English language learning
Despite the potential to develop speaking skills, the development of strategies to benefit from films has been neglected and very few studies have been conducted. One of these strategies has been to compare film scripts and their translations, to identify chunks, technical terms and creative language examples and to list them with their translations, and to do creative dialogue writing activities especially by modeling these scripts where chunks are used extensively. Believing in the importance of evaluating the film scripts with their translations, this study aims to investigate the processes the researcher/teacher‟s high school students went through in learning and using the target language starting with the use of the film adaptations of the literary works, writing their scripts modeling the film scripts, acting their own scripts and shooting their performances. The mixed method research design was used with the triangulation of the qualitative and quantitative data. As the participants, the 68 high school students‟s views were investigated with Likert scale (1-5) questionnaire and their comments about the question items. This study improved the learners‟ productive language skills in general and their knowledge of chunks, jargons and creative language use in particular. This study was also beneficial for translation skills. This study has also improved the creativity, self-confidence and collaboration. The study also demonstrated that productive use of films in teaching English develops imagination and creativity, the literacies regarding information, media, and innovative technology and leadership through the learning and use of English. Key Words: English language movies/series, learning English, scripts, translation, technology.

A longitudinal conversation analytic study on L2 construction learning in a kindergarten classroom
This study documents the intricate relationship between classroom interaction and L2 learning by bringing empirical evidence for L2 construction learning in a kindergarten EFL classroom. The longitudinal video-recorded data were collected from a face-masked kindergarten classroom during the Covid-19 pandemic and examined using Multimodal Conversation Analysis. The analysis showed the emergence of two L2 constructions as the immediate learning objects and the retrospective and prospective examination of the data allowed for the documentation of their gradual sedimentation into two different learners' L2 repertoires. For the better understanding of the learners' and the teacher's roles in shaping the learning processes, the analysis was organized as (i) teacher initiated L2 construction learning (i.e., little bit) and (ii) learner initiated L2 construction learning (i.e., me too). With the examination of the cases of little bit, interactional routines, embodied explanations, translanguaging, choral repetition, understanding checks, repairing dispreferred responses, and designedly incomplete utterances were found as the teacher practices deployed strategically for the introduction and circulation of the construction to facilitate L2 construction learning. The analysis of the construction me too indicated the learners' collaborative accomplishment of resolving an interactional trouble as the point of emergence, and the focal learner's peer-prompted and finally unprompted use of the construction in situ. Accordingly, learner initiated L2 construction learning was enacted as an outcome of the prominent role of peers, thus their learner initiatives, in creating learning opportunities. The findings bring new insights into L2 learning in kindergarten classrooms and provide rich pedagogical implications to kindergarten language teachers.
Oral corrective feedback & repair techniques in dyadic online EFL young learner speaking lessons
Corrective feedback has been at the centre of many SLA studies due to the desire to reveal its impact in creating opportunities for learning. Many of those studies have been mostly delimited to the experimental settings to compare different types of oral corrective feedback, primarily their effectiveness for learning grammatical structures. However, very few studies examined video-mediated or natural interactions to understand oral trajectories of feedback and its impact on young learners. With this in mind, this study explored what kinds of oral corrective feedback practitioners enacted on meaning and form in an informal video-mediated young learners EFL interaction setting and how/if these actions led to learner repairs. Aligning with this purpose, this study, in the first place, analysed the frequencies of corrective feedback through coding based on Lyster & Ranta's (1997) model and repairs with respect to error distribution (syntactic, morphological, phonological, semantic). In the follow-up analysis, the researcher traced the details of correction sequences longitudinally across ten different one-to-one sessions of learners through discourse analysis. Nearly 20 hours of data coming from EFL-speaking lessons of 10 young learners inform us that teachers' preferences in online settings mainly rely on recasts with relatively fewer use of elicitations followed by explicit feedback and other CF moves. However, elicitation and sporadically used double corrective moves proportionally led to more repairs of learners than the most preferred CF, recasts. Nonetheless, some errors repaired by learners were repeated in future sessions, unveiling that the impact of correction and repair may not be long-lasting.
Teacher factor on anxiety level of university preparatory school learners' speaking
Anxiety has been seen by many teachers and researchers as a barrier in language learning process as it prevents the learners from learning effectively. Also, determining the impacts of negative feelings on language learning process is quite important for teachers since these feelings may be a mental block for the learners by preventing them from using comprehensible input they get. Although there are numerous studies on the impact of anxiety level in language classrooms and on the reasons that might cause anxiety, there are relatively fewer studies on teachers' impact on anxiety level of learners' speaking. With this in mind, this study aims to explore the role of the teachers on anxiety level of university prepapartory school learners' speaking skill. For this study, a quantitative research design with the help of an online questionnaire, which was administered to the university preparatory learners studying at a state university based in Ankara, was used. Based on the data analysis, the research presented here showed how teachers can increase or decrease the anxiety level of foreign language learners especially while they are speaking the target language. The findings can contribute to a better learning environment with lower affective filter by revealing the relationship between teacher and learners' anxiety level.
A conversation analytic study on the displays of task difficulty in task-oriented video-mediated interactions
Technology-mediated task-based language teaching growingly sets to become a vital methodology in language teaching and the learning process yet arises questions regarding the viable implications of task design that affect task complexity and task difficulty. This issue has largely been examined in the classroom environment yet remained unexplored in the technology-mediated and online interactional environments. This study aims to present participants' ways of displaying task difficulty in collaborative information-gap tasks. The data includes screen recordings captured by task participants as a part of a telecollaboration project. The analyses rely on the micro-analytic lens of multimodal Conversation Analysis to examine video-mediated interactions on Skype or Google Hangouts and on-screen behaviours in situ. The findings reveal that task participants deploy diverse sources to display and tackle task difficulty over the process of task engagement such as: (i) expressing the difficulty in an explicit way; (ii) revealing the task-relevant trouble through exclamation; (iii) displaying task difficulty with claims of insufficient knowledge; (iv) orienting to skip the relevant task components after not finding a candidate answer, which becomes observable in-and-through video-mediated interactions. In the light of the results, this study provides significant implications for understanding the concept of task difficulty in interaction, epistemic stances of participants in the act of co-construction of meaning, the implementation of task-based language teaching (TBLT), and its premises for computer-assisted language learning (CALL), and synchronous telecollaboration projects.
Problematization sequences in pre-service language teachers' lesson plan adaptation talks in an online setting
Planning for the purpose of teaching languages has long been a research concern in the field of language teacher education. Despite such an interest, only a handful of studies have investigated what happens during the collaborative lesson planning processes. With this in mind, this thesis study examines the interactional practices a group of pre-service English language teachers use in collaborative lesson planning processes with a focus on problematization in an online interaction setting. Using multimodal conversation analysis for the examination of the screen-recorded lesson planning sessions, this thesis study analyses the pre-service English language teachers' interactions in online meetings conducted for the purpose of adapting the lesson plans for online instruction. The analysis showed that the pre-service English language teachers follow the interactional steps identified as topicalization, problematization, suggestion, and agreement. With a particular focus on these steps characterized as problematization sequences, the conversation analytic treatment of the data revealed that problematization might be delivered in an immediate manner or in a delayed way. Delayed problematization includes pre-problematization agreement, pre-problematization positive assessment, pre-problematization mitigation, pre-problematization question sequences. This study offers important insights into the interactional practices employed by pre-service English language teachers for the problematization and suggestion-giving practices. Lastly, the findings contribute to the growing body of literature on planning talk in the field of L2 teacher education and offer implications for L2 teacher education programs.
. Bu çalışmanın amacı tek konuşmacılı arka plan gürültüsünde hedef konuşma algısı performansının normal işiten ve bilateral işitme cihazı kullanan işitme kayıplı yetişkinler arasında karşılaştırılması ve hedef konuşmayı algılarken ses farkı ipuçlarından yararlanma becerisini değerlendirmektir. Çalışmaya kontrol grubu olarak normal işiten 19-52 yaş aralığında (ortalama 31.4 ± 9.4) 30 yetişkin ve çalışma grubu olarak her iki kulağında da işitme cihazı kullanan 18-62 yaş aralığında (ortalama: 36.3 ± 12.6) 30 işitme kayıplı yetişkin katılmıştır. Kullanılan materyal Hacettepe Üniversitesi ve University of Groningen iş birliği ile University of Groningen laboratuvarlarında oluşturulmuştur.
Assessment of binaural benefits in hearing and hearing impaired listeners
The primary goal of this study was to investigate which speech material is most appropriate as stimulus in head shadow effect (HSE) and binaural squelch (SQ) tests. The most appropriate speech material was then used to obtain normative values of both tests. The second goal was to explore the results of the HSE, SQ, azimuth localization (LOC), and the Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of Hearing (SSQ) scale in bilateral cochlear implant (CI) users. Study participants consisted of 30 normal-hearing (NH) persons and 34 bilateral CI users. In the first phase of the study, six NHs and 11 CI users underwent both HSE and SQ tests. Tests were done twice with three different speech materials: monosyllabic words (NVA), disyllabic words (BLU), and sentences (LiCoS). In both groups (NH and CI) and for both tests (HSE and SQ), the results for the different speech materials were calculated in terms of (a) effect size; (b) test-retest reliability and (c) inter-individual variability. In the second phase, the speech material selected in the first phase was used to test a further 24 NH participants to obtain normative values for both tests. In the third phase, both tests were administered to a further 23 bilateral CI users who had at least six months of binaural listening experience. In addition to the HSE and SQ tests, the LOC test and the SSQ scale were used. The results of the first phase indicated that BLU and LiCoS were better test materials for HSE and SQ tests compared to NVA. Although BLU and LiCoS revealed similar results in terms of effect size and inter-individual variability, LiCoS was preferred over BLU for the subsequent phases of the study due to its higher test-retest reliability, especially in CI users. In the NH group the mean (± standard deviation) HSE and SQ were 58±14% and 22±11%, respectively. In the CI group, the mean HSE was 49±13% and the mean SQ was 13±14%, and both were significantly lower than those of the NH group (p<0.05). There were no statistically significant correlations between the HSE, SQ, LOC, and SSQ results. Further analysis did also not reveal any significant correlations between the test results and demographic variables (p>0.05). Sentence tests are preferred as stimulus material in the binaural HSE and SQ tests. Normative data are given for HSE and SQ with the LiCoS sentence test. HSE benefits are positive for all bilateral CI users, while SQ benefits are positive in approximately seven out of ten cases. Because of the high test-retest variability, these tests do not seem suitable for individual evaluations, but should only be used for group comparisons.
Avoidance and compensatory strategies used by Turkish preparatory students in speaking
EFL students resort to various avoidance and compensatory strategies (ACSs) when confronted with communicative problems or linguistic shortcomings. Previous studies conducted in Turkey mainly focused on the relationship between communication strategies and some factors like gender, age, proficiency level and visibility in interaction. The current study explored which ACSs are favored frequently by preparatory students studying English at a foundation university in Ankara, Turkey. To identify these strategies, a five-scale Likert type questionnaire was administered to 52 students first and then speaking exam performances of 24 of those students were examined by transcribing and analyzing audio recordings. In addition, semi-structured interviews were held with 5 English instructors as well as retrospective interviews with 5 students to corroborate findings from different sources. The findings of the questionnaire illustrate that students favor avoidance strategies like message reduction and syntactic avoidance most, whereas they prefer compensatory strategies such as approximation, circumlocution, time gaining and prefabricated patterns. However, qualitative analysis of speaking exams reveal that message abandonment is the most frequent avoidance strategy while prefabricated patterns, self-repetition, and self-repair respectively are the most frequent compensatory strategies employed by the students as well as other common ones like stalling and time gaining, code-switching and literal translation. Finally, the results suggest that the use of avoidance strategies starts to decrease as the proficiency level increases, however, there is a visible boost in the use compensatory strategies from beginner towards intermediate levels but compensatory strategy use starts to decline in advanced levels.

The role of mass media tools on efl speaking skills
This study investigates the effect of mass media authentic materials on EFL students? success in listening and speaking accurately and fluently. Two elementary level classes of theEnglish Preparatory School were chosen randomly as the subjects of this study. There were 40students grouped into two, one as experimental and the other as control. The subjects in the experimental group studied mass media authentic materials designed for them only. The subjects in the control group studied the standard curriculum. Besides, to get to know the students better and observe their common perspectives towards listening and speaking, an attitude questionnaire was given to both groups at the beginning and a similar one was given to the experimental group at the end of the study to determine whether the students have developed a positive attitude or not. The Hypothesis put forward for this study was; `if I use authentic mass media tools such as television, radio, films, videos, songs, and teach the expressions used in daily life, my students will pick up the colloquial language and will be able to use them?. Data was gathered from two examination results and tests. As a result of data analysis, a statistically significant difference has been found between the scores of the first and the second examinations and tests. When the scores were analyzed, the findings indicated that mass media authentic materials were effective in foreign language listening and especially speaking skills development and these techniques raised awareness on how to speak accurately and fluently in a foreign language. Motivating english foreign language students to speak in English classrooms
This study aims chiefly at identifying the factors that demotivate EFL students from speaking English in the English classrooms, and as part of solution; it aims at indentifying the motivational factors and strategies that can contribute in motivating EFL students to speak actively in the English classrooms. Thus, the study is of both quantitative and qualitative nature as it discusses the frequency and kinds of the factors that motivate and/or demotivate EFL students from speaking English in the classrooms. To investigate the aim of the study, the questionnaire and interviews were administered to the participants. The questionnaire was administered to 109 3rd year EFL students who were randomly selected from College of Education, Salahaddin University for the academic year of 2014-2015. However, in order to obtain rich and more reliable data, ten EFL students and ten teachers were also interviewed at the above- mentioned university. The researcher has come up with a number of findings including the following most highlighted ones: Despite the students' positive attitudes towards speaking English, the majority of EFL students are not competent for speaking English. However, both quantitative and qualitative results revealed that the linguistic factors like mispronunciation, lack of grammatical patterns, lack of vocabulary, lack of knowledge and fear of making linguistic mistakes; the psychological factors such as fear of making mistakes, fear of being lounged at by classmates, shyness, less confidence and anxiety, and the classroom environmental factors like unfriendly classroom, lack of enough time, large number of students and the infrequent use of technological utilities and motivational strategies like role-play and presentation are main factors that demotivate students from speaking English actively in the classes. The shortcomings in the curriculum, cultural variations and students being inaccurate and influent are also found as micro factors that impeded students from speaking English. The findings also indicated that teachers' use of words of applauses, allocating more time, providing friendly classroom atmosphere and allowing students to choose topics of discussion are among the most prominent factors that contribute in motivating EFL students to speak in the classrooms. Moreover, using technological utilities, inviting native speakers and the use of CLT (Community Language Teaching) are also found as motivating factors to encourage students to participate in speaking activities in the classrooms. Furthermore, as part of solution, the findings indicated that the strategies such as applying role-play, debate and problem-solving, employing group/pair work discussion, providing friendly learning environment and raising students' confidence are very important to engage students in speaking activities. The teachers also reported that providing students with different activities, asking them to do presentation, adopting student-centered approach, paying attention to individual needs and preventing students from using L1 are among strategies teachers can use to help students engage in speaking activities. Finally, the study presented some pedagogical implications including providing students with adequate motivation, vocabulary and up to date teaching materials. However, teachers should adopt student-centered approach, provide topics which reflect students' needs, celebrate and reward the students' success and pay more attention to the employment of role-play and group/pair work discussion to motivate EFL students to speak English in the English classrooms.
An investigation on the influence of temperament on l2 achievement in Turkish intermediate level of efl speakers
Since the dawn of psychology, there have been studies conducted to understand human beings behavior and reason behind these actions and reactions and how it affects language acquisition, including L2 acquisition. This study examined the awareness of temperament types among Turkish L2 speakers, and went on to analyze if and how the various temperament affect language learning, acquisition and skills in intermediate level Turkish English language learners. The primary data consisted of 50 males and females to make a total of 100, all took a personality test to determine the category they belong to in their temperament, and in addition went through tests based on different language: vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and reading, while also being tested in an oral interview for the speaking aspect of L2. The subjects for data collection were purposively selected, and the collated data were analyzed using SPSS (version 20.0) while utilizing ANOVA and Spearman's Correlation Analysis. The findings showed that there was a limited knowledge of what the four temperaments are by the respondents. However, some have an idea what their temperaments might be. This means that majority are aware of the differences in human behavior, and some actually took their time to study what temperaments may be and how it affects human behavior. There was the high awareness of sanguine-phlegmatic tendencies by the respondents. In addition, the role that temperament played in reading is important, which means that the temperament one has goes a long way to either positively or negatively influence the ability to read in English. However, when it came to writing, speaking and listening, the influence of temperament may not be important as they were not significantly correlated to any temperament type. The study concluded that the findings have serious implication for both the students of EFL and the language teachers, and that temperament shows some kind of role in the performance of the second language learning in Turkish learners. Also the teachers should encourage the most reticent students by increasing opportunities for communication and try to make sure that the most outspoken do not drown the latter or hinder them from learning. The pragmatic transfer of requestive speech acts by Arab and Turkish EFL learners at the preparatory school
Cross-cultural pragmatic transfer is one potential cause of inappropriate performances in a second or foreign language. It occurs when nonnative learners converse in the language they are learning and transfer the conversational rules of their first language into the language they are studying. The present study is an endeavor to find out whether Arab and Turkish EFL learners convey their first language requesting strategies into English language. To this end, a Discourse Completion Task(DCT) and an oral interview task were adopted to verify pragmatic transfer from Arabic into English and from Turkish into English, if there was any. Three groups participated in this study, where the first two groups included Arab EFL learners living in Turkey and the third group included Turkish EFL learners. Leaners' language proficiency was measured using computer based and paper based tests to divide thirty Arab EFL learners into fifteen high proficient learners and fifteen low proficient. Three versions of written DCTs were used, an Arabic version, an English version, and a Turkish one. The Arabic version was distributed to the two groups of high and low proficiency Arab EFL students prior to distributing the English one and the Turkish version was distributed to the Turkish students prior to distributing the English one. Qualitative data gained from the Turkish and Arab EFL learners responses to the DCTs and the oral interview were graded according to a criterion and the results were quantified to analyze them descriptively by using the Turkish and Arab EFL learners responses as a baseline.
The effects of explicit/ implicit instructions on the development of advanced EFL learners' pragmatic knowledge of english: Apology speech act
One of the important elements of communicative competence is pragmatics and one of the effective ways for an efficient communication is by keeping pragmatic competence vital. Despite the fact that pragmatics has drawn attention in foreign language learning, it has been largely neglected in foreign language classrooms. The current study explored the effects of explicit and implicit instructions on the development of advanced EFL learners' pragmatic knowledge in terms of apology speech act. A total of 10 English native speakers and 40 advanced EFL students participated in this study. The Iraqi Kurdish EFL learners were selected from grade 12 in British International School in Erbil/ Iraq and their level was determined by a proficiency test called the Oxford Quick Placement Test (OQPT). These 40 participants were divided randomly into two; explicit group (EG) who was taught various ways to apologize explicitly through warm-up activities at the beginning of each lesson, exercises, short videos and movies, pictures, songs and direct feedback, whereas the participants of the implicit group (IG) were taught apology strategies through the same materials but with a different technique of implicit teaching, receiving indirect feedback and without receiving warming-up activities. They were provided a pre-test called Multiple-choice Discourse Completion Test (MDCT) which consisted of 10 different situations of apology and were based on the participants' real-life situation, each situation included 3 options and only one answer could be selected which they believed is the best. The aim was to show if there were any significant differences between EG and IG. The English native speakers were given the same (MDCT) and were asked to choose the most appropriate answers. After the treatment, (EG) and (IG) were provided the same MDCT as a post-test. The findings revealed that the results of EG and IG were significant and they showed improvements after the treatment, and the EG outperformed the IG. In post-test both groups of EG and IG received the same MDCT as a delayed-test. The findings showed that, the results of both groups were significant but EG stayed at the same level and outperformed the IG meanwhile IG showed reduction of their progress.
The role of motivational strategies on motivating Iraqiefl students to speak in English
Motivation determines the degree of students' desire to learn English. Thus, the current research is discovering the role of motivational strategies to improve Iraqi learners' speaking skills. The problem of the study is that Iraqi learners (EFL students) at the departments of English at Salahaddin University are normally not motivated enough to learn English. Three research questions were designed according to the aims of the study which are: finding out the types of the motivational strategies used by university teachers to improve the students' speaking skill, the extent to which teachers of English language use motivational strategies and the students' attitude toward motivational strategies in speaking classroom. The instruments included questionnaires and interviews. The participants of the study consisted of 113 EFL students in different years of study; second, third and fourth year at salahaddin university-college of languages-department of English language. Also, 18 EFL teacher whose teach English language at the same college participated in the current study. So, the questionnaires and interview were administered to both groups of the participants. Finally, after collecting and analyzing the data, the findings indicated that the strategies such as applying role-play, debate and problem-solving, employing group/pair work discussion and providing friendly learning environment are very important to engage students in speaking activities. The teachers also reported that providing students with different activities, asking them to do presentation, adopting student-centered approach, paying attention to individual needs and preventing students from using L1 are among strategies teachers can use to help students engage in speaking activities. Also, the majority of the students was motivated and thinks that motivational strategies are important to improve speaking skills. Also, they think that friendly relationship, group work and creating enjoyable atmosphere are the most effective motivational strategies to develop the students' speaking skills. Finally, some recommendations shown are; motivational strategies are important to encourage the learners to speak, the learners must rely on different motivational strategies to master their speaking skills and it is necessary to use different types of motivational strategies in class.
