Düzce Shar'iyya Registry numbered 1156 dated 1313-1316/1895-1898 (Text and analysis)

Shar'iyya Registers are registers regarding legal and administrative matters written by judges during the Ottoman Empire. These registers, most of which contain records of lawsuits heard by judges, contain important information about the daily life, social and economic structure, and legal system of the Ottoman society. In this context, Düzce Shar'iyya Registers also have the potential to make important contributions to local history studies. Only the Register numbered 1153 and 1165 of the 33 Düzce Shar'iyya Registers, which have not received sufficient attention to date, were examined as a master's thesis. In this study, the Shar'iyya Register numbered 1156, related to the years 1313-1316/1895-1898, written by the deputy judge who served in Düzce district of Bolu sanjak of Kastamonu province, was discussed and detected the information it gave about Düzce of the period was determined. In the Registry numbered 1156, there are 105 records regarding the appointment of attorneys/lawyers in cases that have been filed or will be opened on issues such as real estate, land, inheritance, alimony, dowry, marriage, divorce, receivables and debts. Based on the information contained in these records, the neighborhoods, villages and administrative structure of Düzce between 1895 and 1898, the religious and cultural situation in the context of individuals, names and titles, the places of origin of the migrations to Düzce and the settlement sciences in Düzce were tried to be discussed. This study, which allows making predictions about the content and subjects of Düzce Sharia Registers, also claims to be a guide for future studies.
