Antalya foundations in the 18th and 19th centuries (According to evkaf and hurufat books)

This study examines foundations located in Antalya's central neighborhoods, based on Antalya's pious foundation and currency registers. This research examines foundations in Antalya's city center, first examining the staff employed in charitable institutions and then examining the income and expenditures of these institutions in the 18th and 19th centuries with a holistic approach. For this purpose, 6 foundation deeds, 16 foundation books, 21 typeface books and 26 sharia registry books belonging to foundations in Antalya were scanned one by one, foundation works and the neighborhoods where these foundation works are located were determined, and the appointments made to these foundation institutions and the income and expenses of the foundations were revealed based on the registration date. Drawing primarily on Antalya's foundation and letter registers, this study consists of an introduction and four chapters. The introduction provides a brief history of Antalya and information about the concept of foundations, followed by information on the thesis's purpose, subject, framework, and sources. The first section explores the concepts of mosque and masjid, taking into account the appointments made to these foundation institutions and their income and expenditures. Antalya's mosques and masjids are explored throughout history. Information about each mosque and masjid is provided through the endowment and letter registers, supplemented by printed works. The second section explores Antalya's educational institutions. This section first explains the concepts of madrasah and primary school, then provides information about the appointments made to these educational institutions and identifies their income and expenses. The third section examines foundation institutions such as soup kitchens, fountains, wells, canals, inns, and covered bazaars that serve social purposes. The fourth and final section of the study examines the avarız foundations established in Antalya and foundations established to serve various purposes. Based on the data obtained in the study, detailed information was obtained on the names of the foundation works in the central districts of Antalya in a period of approximately two hundred years, their benefactors, the dates they were active, the income and expenses of these foundation works, the endowment deeds of the foundations identified in this period, the appointments made to these foundations, who applied for which positions, the length of time the foundation officials served, the kinship relations of the foundation officials, the wages received by the foundation officials and the conditions of their appointment. Another important conclusion reached through the research is the discovery of new information regarding numerous foundation works that do not currently exist and about which little information is available in other sources. Consequently, this study has collectively uncovered these lesser-known foundation works, demonstrating the importance of foundations and their works in the growth and development of cities.
