The effects of industrialization on the fabrics produced for the 19 th century Ottoman Palace

The Ottoman Empire maintained its existence in its own traditional pattern until the 19th century, away from economical and social advancements of Europe. The Industrial Revolution arising in the 18th century in Europe had noticeable effects on traditional areas of production in the 19th century, factory productions spread all around the world rapidly. In this period, when the Ottoman Empire territories became an important market for many European manufacturers, the manufactured goods of Europe gradually replaced Ottoman products. The changing social structure and life style as well as the increasing trade relations with European countries increased the imports and exports within the Empire.The effects coming along with the industrialization of the 19th century are discussed in the Fabric Production in the Ottoman Empire section. The positive and negative effects of Europe on the Ottoman fabric production are limited with the court fabrics within the contents of this thesis. The repeated patterns of floral and medallion motifs were often used in the composition schemes of the court fabrics produced by the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century. In the same era, while the production of court fabrics embodying classical pattern and composition schemes of the Ottoman Empire continued, it was observed that with the influence of Europe, fabrics with baroque and rococo style were also produced.In this thesis, some fabrics found in Topkapı Palace Museum and Hereke Factory archives were examined in thoroughly and detailed explanations were given.
