The eelements of wealth and clothing culture in Ottoman society in the first half of the 19th century (The example of Manisa)

Master Degree PhD People's struggle for survival and desire to consume has continued since they existed and it's still continue. Therefore, people initially made their choices about life in order to meet their basic needs. These preferences have been shaped in the context of consumption habits and fashion which can be considered as luxury rather than necessity over time. In this context, the comparisons and the changes that based on the 141 tereke registers analyzed in Manisa during the 1850s between the Muslim-non-Muslim women and the factors related to the daily life such as the clothing and wealth and the changes that have occurred on them constitute areas for questioning in our study. This study area, which is limited to wealth analysis and clothing-culture culture due to the rich content of tereke books as the building block of our research, has attracted the attention of many social scientists especially in recent years. It is known that many data are available in the tereke books in addition to items which contain theof all kinds of movable property and real estate elements left behind by dead people. Household items, kitchen utensils, books, food, fabrics, etc. are among the content that can be analyzed in the tereke books. When it come to the questions of when the concepts of westernization or modernization were found in Manisa and when westernization or modernization include in Ottoman society, in the sense of analyzed tereke books it was determined that the tradition continued until the middle of the 19th century and the changes started gradually in this process. It is a fact that change does not immediately happen and traditionalism and modernity are coexist.
