The usage of sound and light as a plastic phenomenon in contemporary ceramics from the 1950s to nowadays

From the 1950s onwards, such concepts as space, movement, motion, and time have become new focal points in art and gained importance as a field of research. However, new material options that diversified with the development of technology created a new field of experimentation and creation for artists. Sound and light, amongst such materials, were considered differently in various art disciplines. In the present study, "addressing sound and light as a plastic phenomenon" describes the review and investigation of sound and light in spatial, temporal, symbolic, and conceptual dimensions in artworks, the basic material of which are ceramic. By the 1950s, the sound was incorporated into the quest for innovation by art and artists and utilized as a stand-alone concept outside the concept of music. First seen in the art of painting in the history of art, light is an important element in perceiving three dimensions in sculpture and architecture. So far, the light maintained a plastic value in ceramics, as regards both surface and relief as well as threedimensional forms. Following technological developments in the 20th century, sound and light are now a part of artistic works not merely as a plastic value but also as material. Because ceramics gained an artistic identity by the late 20th century, ceramics met sound and light as material comparatively later. Subsequently, the use of sound and light by artists on various ceramic bodies became widespread recently. The subject of this study is the plastic language formed by using sound, light, and ceramic altogether as material. This creates a new discourse and content by creating a composite media beyond natural outcomes of the unique qualities of the three media. In this study, the aforementioned plastic language is discussed with examples from various artists. Data obtained via the research method were evaluated based on those examples.
