Abstract (EN)

It is known that the language of visual and written expression, which is formed by transforming emotions, thoughts and concepts into images, has been used as a communication tool between human beings from past to present. Throughout the history of painting, it is seen that writing and calligraphy have taken place in plastic arts with the interactions of cultural images. With the figurative expressions in the cave paintings, the communication tool was later transformed into writing and used as an expressive approach in works of different periods and movements within the art of painting. The relationship between writing and painting in Western painting has been used with different stylistic effects in the works of the artists. Different writings and calligraphies, which are the traditional cultural motifs of Islamic and Easterncultures, attracted the attention of western artists and it was observed that they inspired the art of painting with the synthesis between East and West. In the thesis, new formations that were initiated to revive the culture of a nation after the establishment of the Republic with the last period of the Ottoman Empire, and the art movements in Turkish painting were investigated. Therefore, the creativity of the important artists of Contemporary Turkish Painting, who used writing and calligraphy as a visual expression language, was evaluated. The art views of Elif Naci, Sabri Berkel, Abidin Elderoğlu, Şemsi Arel, Burhan Doğançay, Özdemir Altan, Erol Akyavaş, Süleyman Saim Tekcan, Ergin İnan and Bedri Baykam and their use of writing and calligraphy in their works are presented. After evaluating the historical process of the relationship between writing, calligraphy and art, especially painting, in which writing is used as a visual language, in the last section, my own artistic works are discussed. The purpose of the application studies, The writing and calligraphy images used in the abstract paintings created by It is conveyed to the audience with an expressive effect.
