Istanbul's city theme in post 1960s Turkish painting

The aim of the study is to evaluate the differences in understanding of Istanbul's city theme in Turkish painting post 1960. Up to the present day, starting from 1960, the Istanbul city theme including the first examples of Turkish painting art developing in a western sense was chosen because of the reflections beginning with migration and distorted urbanization of the city of Istanbul in the 1950s. On the other hand, the paintings from the 1968 generation of painters, who had an important place in Turkish painting in the figurative sense, started in the 1960s to address the city life with their intellectual and figure-oriented paintings. The examples of paintings included in this work show two important approaches to the theme in question. The city of Istanbul which began to lose its beauty and identity due to socio-political / social reasons, began to see the reflections in art starting in the 1960s reveals the process of breakage in Istanbul city theme. In the most general sense, the handling of the Istanbul city theme has evolved from poetic to critical and once again revealed the direct relationship between art and society. On the other hand, there is still a continued understanding in approaching the subject from a poetic point of view. The first section of the work is divided into the illustrations of Istanbul city theme in Turkish painting before 1960. In this section, the considerable painters of the time and their paintings dealing with the theme in question are examined chronologically. Examples from post 1960 are in the second section, highlighting the social processes that gave rise to a critical approach to the theme and the pictures reflecting these processes were evaluated chronologically. My personal pictures are presented in the third section and finally in the fourth section the results are given.
