Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACTNinety five percent of Turkiye?s population have been living under the risk of earthquake.Uptoday ,due to North Anatolian Fault and East Anatolian Fault, many destructive earhquakes whosemagnitudes reaching 7.0 Richter have taken place and also will take place. In order to protect ourpeople and cities and not to suffer the heavy losses such as in Kocaeli Earthquake ,attention should bepaid to earthquake resistant design.First stage of earthquake resistant design is calculation of seismic forces. For this purposevarious analysis methods are employed it is not possible to determine the exact values of seismicforces due to inaccuracies that analysis methods contain.Earthquake damages give idea about exact behaviour of structues and reveal the necassaryrules that must be obeyed on the point of earthquake reistant design. The chief reasons of damages isirregular structural systems, violation of ductility rules and poor material quality. As a rule, earthquake codes give rules on the calculation of earthquake forces, irregularitycriteria for structural systems and details ensuring element ductility and also determines lower limit formaterial quality. Even their name or the countries where they are in use are different, the commonpoint of earthquake codes is necessity of ensuring the strength and ductility simultaneously.Th purpose of this study is to review and compare the provisions on subjects that mentionedabove.Key words: Earthquake resistant design , irregular structures ,static analysis method, modal responseanalysis, linear time-history analysis, base shear force, high ductility elements,
