Magical realism in Turkish novel after 2000

Magical realism emerged in Europe in the early part of the twentieth century and has found a place in many branches of art today. Its presence in literature was realised through Latin American writers. The compatibility of magical realism's expressive environment with Latin American society and history leads writers in the region to prefer this narrative style. As a result, magical realism becomes a universal art movement by making an impact in Latin American literature. Magical realism, whose first examples in Turkish literature were given by names such as Nazlı Eray and Latife Tekin, has been increasingly popular among writers, readers and researchers since the 1980s. Based on its development in Turkish literature, in the first part of the study, the origin of the concept of magical realism, its historical development in world and Turkish literature, its definition and characteristics, and its relationship with similar narrative genres are discussed. Considering the theoretical studies on magical realism, the second part of the study consists of analysing the works in Turkish literature after 2000. In the second part, Nazlı Eray's Kayıp Gölgeler Kenti; Kaan Murat Yanık's Dünyasızlar and Sular Üstünde Gökler Altında; Burhan Sönmez's Kuzey; Fuat Sevimay's Kapalıçarşı; Mine Söğüts Kırmızı Zaman; Sema Kaygusuz's Yere Düşen Dualar are analyzed to reveal the interpretation and place of magical realism in Turkish literature.
