Comparative analysis of mathematics questions in the eighth grade high school transition system in 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 academic years and mathematics in textbooks according to MATH Taxonomy

This research was carried out to examine the High School Transition System (HGST) mathematics questions that started to be implemented in 2018 and 2019 in the context of learning areas and cognitive processes. In addition, the learning areas and cognitive processes of the unit evaluation questions in the books used in mathematics textbooks in secondary schools in 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 academic years were determined and the questions in the central exam questions and textbooks were compared. Groups and categories of MATH taxonomy were used to reveal cognitive processes. MATH taxonomy is used to classify questions prepared to improve students' mathematical knowledge.Students who encounter questions from the C-Verification and Interpretation, Inferences, Estimates and Comparisons and Evaluation group, the last group of taxonomy, develop deep and strategic thinking skills. In the study, document review, one of the qualitative research approaches, was used. In the analysis of the data in the research, document analysis was made.According to the findings of the research,it can be said that the mathematics questions in the central exam and textbooks have a similar result in terms of learning areas. In both central exams and textbooks, the most questions were asked from the field of "Geometry and Measurement", and the least questions were asked from the field of "Data processing". When compared to the groups and categories of MATH taxonomy as cognitive processes, 2018-LGS's C2-Inferences, Predictions and Comparisons, 2019-LGS's B2- Application to New Situations, A1- Information and Information System of 2017-2018 mathematics textbook and It is among the findings that the 2018-2019 mathematics textbook contains questions from the A3- Use of Routine Operations categories. In this context, it can be said that LGS math questions are questions to measure higher level thinking skills than the questions in textbooks.
