Seaport management in Turkey after the 24 January Decisions

Maritime, has an important place during the Ottoman state and in the republic of turkey established later, too. The maritime industry was influenced by the economic view of the time. When the Ottoman Empire lost its power, especially England gained significant advantages with the Baltalimanı treaty. Past commercial privileges given to france have arisen the problem of capitulation with time. The new state, was established after the War of liberation, has given serious struggles over cabotage, capitulation and the straits to ensure economic independence. In this thesis, The maritime sector has examined in the form of a historical panorama. While the section before 1980 is explained in a slightly more summary form, the process after the 24 January decisions is detailed with the help of statistical data. Primarily in the last period of the Ottoman Empire the effect of the dominant economic views on the country's economy was mentioned from the foundation of the republic to 1980. According to the findings obtained from seaport associations working on seaport management, chamber of maritime commerce, ministry of transportation infrastructure and development plans; The 24 January decisions has increased the number of privatizations, but it hasn't at the desired level due to political and physical deficiencies. Economic crises that have lived turkey economy the last 40 years has affected the seaport management, a costly field. Since the necessary infrastructure has not developed, a place has not been gained in global competition. Although the private sector does not have much experience in seaport, its superior service quality and solution oriented structure also contributed to the national economy. The increase in the number of ports specializing in handling is a positive development. Although the expected stability and economic inferences have not been achieved yet, important steps have been taken with the cooperation of the private sector and the government to improve foreign trade.
