A study on teaching the measurement of force and friction unitin the 5th grade online with simple tools

This study was carried out to find out the effect of the science lessons, in which laboratory practices and the use of concrete materials are obligatory, on the scientific process skills and achievements of the 5th-grade students in the home environment, supported by simple tools in the distance education process due to the pandemic we are in. The study was carried out with the action research method within the scope of qualitative research. For this purpose, 30 students studying in the 5th grade in a middle school in the city center of Igdir Province were included in the study, and the practice was carried out over the EBA and zoom application for 4 weeks. 15 students were randomly selected to the experimental group and 15 students to the control group. The activity papers prepared by the researcher on canva.com were screen-shared and applied to the students in the experimental group. The activities were prepared by taking expert opinions. Student diaries, researcher diaries, scientific process skills tests, and achievement tests were used after the activities prepared to determine the effects of the interventions made by the students at home with simple tools and equipment on their scientific process skills and achievements. Student diaries and researcher diaries were examined, and the expressions used were divided into themes and categories and content analysis was conducted. For the analysis of scientific process skills and achievement tests, SPSS 24 was used and the data were processed with t-test analysis. It was concluded that carrying out the activities designed in the research in the home environment with simple equipment during the Covid-19 period had a positive effect on the academic success of the students, some dimensions of scientific process skills, and the total score.
