Abstract (EN)

The 19th century was a period of urbanization and population increase for the Ottoman Empire. There are two sources of population growth; immigrant populations from territories that were lost, albeit slightly, by progress in the rate of population growth and the loss of territory by the empire. One of these developing cities is Adapazarı/Sakarya, which we use with two names today. Adapazarı has always been in Kocaeli in the administrative division until 1954. In this study, the population books of the Island District numbered 595 and 599 in the Presidential Ottoman Archives were used. The population counted was recorded separately as Muslim and non-Muslim in separate books. In the book numbered 595, the Muslim population residing in the central neighborhoods of the Ada Kaza is recorded, and in the book number 599, the non-Muslim population residing in the central neighborhoods is recorded. In these notebooks, information about the ages, fathers' names, physical characteristics, degree of kinship, military status, family names and professions of the population living in the central neighborhoods of Adapazarı District are included. We must state that villages and towns such as Sapanca, which is subject to Adapazarı, are outside the scope of this study. According to the notebooks examined, the total population of Muslims residing in the thirteen neighborhoods in the district center was 1,138, while the total population of non-Muslims residing in nineteen neighborhoods was 2,420 people.
