Investigation of the relationship between aging in place, recreation awareness levels, and quality of life in individuals over 65 years of age

Abstract (EN)
The purpose of this study is to examine the aging in place, recreational awareness, and quality of life levels of individuals aged 65 and over, and to identify the relationships between these variables and significant differences based on demographic variables. The study was conducted using a quantitative method based on a relational screening model. The study sample consisted of 500 elderly individuals who applied to the Gerontology Unit of Uşak Training and Research Hospital and resided at home. The study group was determined using typical case sampling, a purposive sampling method. Data were collected through one-on-one interviews, and voluntary consent was obtained from the participants. Data collection tools included a Personal Information Form, the Aging in Place Scale, the Recreational Awareness Scale, and the Quality of Life in the Elderly Scale. SPSS 22.0 was used for data analysis; independent samples t-tests were used for comparisons between paired groups, and one-way ANOVA was used for comparisons of three or more groups. Pearson correlation analysis was used to determine the level of correlation between variables. The analyses revealed no significant differences in scale scores based on gender. A significant difference was found only between chronic disease status and quality of life. Significant differences were observed in some subscales (pleasure and entertainment, social success, self-development, and perceived social support) based on education and income levels. Significant differences were found in physical adequacy, perceived social support, and received support scores for leisure time adequacy. However, no differences were observed in some subscales such as perceived disability, satisfaction, and autonomy. According to Pearson correlation analysis results, positive and significant relationships were found between recreational awareness, aging in place, and quality of life. Consequently, levels of recreational awareness and aging in place were found to have significant and positive effects on the quality of life of older individuals. Demographic characteristics may be a determining factor in some scale dimensions, but environmental and individual factors also play important roles. Based on the research findings, recommendations include increasing social and physical environments where older individuals can spend their leisure time more efficiently; strengthening social support systems; and developing accessible recreational services, particularly for low-income individuals and those with chronic illnesses. Furthermore, implementing awareness-raising programs on the concept of recreational awareness among older individuals may contribute to the aging in place process.
