Abstract (EN)
Earthquakes are one of the most deadly disasters and buildings are the primary cause of the death. It is a known fact that the making buildings earthquake proof, saves lives and protects the economy. Powerful earthquakes occurring in Turkey, cause damages to nearby locations. Because of the buildings had been rendered unusable, thousands of people are homeless. Public buildings can be use as a shelter which have enough room and can provide basic necessities for free. School buildings can provide these necessities more than the other public buildings in the best way. Making school buildings to be strong and ductile enough to survive the shaking of an earthquake with acceptable damage, offers many benefits during and after the earthquake event: The possibility of great loss of many lives in earthquake because of crowded school buildings can be prevented, school buildings can be use as a shelter for many people who affected by earthquakes and children can continue their education when they turn back to their normal life. In this thesis study, 8-classes type school buildings which one of the most commonly used projects by the Ministry of National Education, has been analyzed according to the different material properties that been used. School buildings has been projected via ideCad Statik, according to five different concrete strength; 6, 8, 10, 12 and 16MPa, ribbed rebar or not and the quantity of stirrup. Nonlinear push analysis was performed according to DD-1 and DD-3 earthquake ground motion level and the strengthening project has been created according to the damage situation of the analysis result of the building. As a result of the analysis according to the DD-1 and DD-3 earthquake ground motion level, it is intended to provide, controlled damage and limited damage performance level. In this reinforcement project, the expected level of damage has been reached with using concrete jacketing column and shear walls. Approximate cost has been calculated according to the strengthening need of the building. A chart has been created with using calculated approximate reinforcement cost and the existing building features. With this chart, it is aimed to provide practicality to decide rebuilding or strengthening of existing building.
