The relationship between parental attitudes, self-esteem and shyness among children aged 9-11

The feelings, thoughts, behaviors and attitudes of family members towards each other, communication and interaction patterns have a great impact on the child's first experiences. When the family is thought to be the place where the preparation for life is made; It will be seen how important these relationships, experiences, values and expectations are in this environment. Strategies that parents use as adults to raise childrearing attitudes, habits, thinking styles, decision making, problem solving, and difficulties are important to be a model for the child. Because the individual begins his or her first social experiences by communicating with the family members. Satisfying, supportive,prohibitive or threatening communication with the child determines the direction of his or her self-development and what kind of individual it will be in the future. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between parental attitudes, shyness and self-esteem among in children aged 9-11 years. In this study, a sampling of 424 students consisting of 227 female and 197 male students were administered Sampling Parent Attitudes Scale, Child Shyness Scale and Cooper-Smith Self-Esteem Inventory. According to findings from the research, it was determined that children 's self - esteem is related to both mother' s and father 's attitudes. Psychological autonomy and supervisory attitudes displayed by the mother increase children's self-esteem. The attitude of supervision displayed by the father increases the self respect of the children again. On the other hand, it has been found that child shyness is not related to parent attitudes.
