Classification of concept in books A1 – A2

The words and concepts in the textbooks used in teaching Turkish as a foreign language are important for improving the vocabulary of the learners. The texts in the textbooks and the words in the vocabulary teaching activities affect the vocabulary learning of the learners as they represent the concepts in their mother tongue. For this reason, which concepts the words are related with, which concept areas the concepts fall into, and the frequency of the words can play a role in accelerating or decelerating vocabulary teaching. The aim of this study is to determine the concepts and concept areas in the texts which take place in the books (A1 and A2 level) used in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. In this research, the concepts in Yedi İklim and Istanbul textbooks at A1 and A2 levels, which are used in teaching Turkish as a foreign language, concept areas and word frequency were examined. The research was designed in accordance with the case study. The data of the study were collected by document analysis method and analyzed with content analysis. The texts in the textbooks were transferred to the digital environment, and the concept fields, categories and concepts were classified using MAXQDA 2022. The concepts in the textbooks are separated according to the level. Categories and concept areas were reached from concepts. In addition to that textbooks were compared and common concepts were determined, and the word frequency list was created using descriptive statistics. As a result of the classification of the concepts, 21 concept areas, 119 categories and 1244 concepts were identified in the Yedi İklim A1 textbook; 21 concept areas, 112 categories and 791 concepts were identified in the Istanbul A1 textbook. According to the word analysis, 64.38% of 1934 words were found to be as a concept in Yedi Climate A1 textbook while 59.71% of 1323 words were found to be as a concept in the Istanbul A1 textbook. As a result, it is seen that the word counts and concept ratios are close to each other. As a result of the classification of A2 level concepts, 23 concept areas, 143 categories and 2008 concepts were identified in the Yedi Climate A2 textbook; 23 concept areas, 135 categories and 1271 concepts were identified in the Istanbul A2 textbook. According to the word frequency analysis, 66.27% of 3030 words were found to be as a comcept in Yedi Climate A2 textbook while 58.81% of 2161 words were found to be as a concept in the Istanbul A2 textbook.
