The relationship between the courses entitled piano education, music theory and hearing education and accompaniment and the skills of improvised accompaniment to the school songs of the last year students of Abant İzzet Baysal University department

This study was conducted with the purpose of determining the relationshipbetween the courses entitled ?Piano Education?, ?Music Theory and HearingEducation? and ?Accompaniment? and the skills of improvised accompaniment tothe school songs of the last year students at the Department of Music Education andof introducing the views of related instructors and students about current situations ofthe courses in curricula which are thought to be influential on this skills.The sample was determined as 20 last year students enrolled at Abant IzzetBaysal University Faculty of Education Department of Fine Arts Education MusicEducation Programme in Fall Term and 10 instructors who were giving coursesentitled ?Piano?, Music Theory and Hearing Education? and ?Accompaniment? inthe Fall Term of 2005-2005 Educational Year.In this study, for the purpose of obtaining quantitative data, theoreticalanalysis form was used in order to determine the theoretical knowledge of the lastyear students, observation was made in order to determine the level of students?accomplishment of behaviours related to improvised accompaniment to the schoolsongs, a survey was applied in order to determine the views of instructors andstudents about the courses which effect the develepment of skills; and documentarysources were reviewed for supporting the study with qualitative data.?Statistical Package for Social Sciences? (S.P.S.S.) software, frequency andpercentages were used during the process of data analyis of this study; and theobtained values are descibed converting them to tables. As a result of evaluation ofthe qualitative data ? Theoretical Analysis Point? and ?The Point for ImprovisedAccompaniment to the School Songs? were obtained for each student, these pointswere associated with the academic success; and the views of students and instructorsabout the courses which effect the skills are presented in tables as well.After the evaluation of the data, it was found that the last year studentsenrolled at A.I.B.U. Faculty of Education Department of Fine Arts Education MusicEducation Programme could accomplish the bahaviours related to improvisedaccompaniment to the school songs at medium level in theory and application; andthe instructors and the students were in agreement about the role, importance andrearrangement of the courses which effect on acquiring and development of therelated skills.Key Words: Piano Education, Accompaniment, Music Theory and HearingEducation, Improvised Accompaniment Skill, Music Teacher Education.
