Prof. Dr. Uğur ALPAGUTJanuary 2006 xv+219 pagesThe present study investigates existing teaching methods in the course ofindividual musical instrument teaching of violin teaching 1 (IMITOVT- 1) at theDepartment of Music Teacher Education in the Faculty of Fine Arts. Thisinvestigation has resulted in the development of a new model to be used in thecourse of IMITOVT- 1 which helps to teach fundamental behavior of violin.Further, application of this new model to the first year of violin students, who weregraduated from anatolioan high school of fine arts, is evaluated in terms of violineducation at the Abant Izzet Baysal University, Faculty of Fine Arts and Departmentof Music Teacher Education.For the purpose of this study, twenty-five violin teacher were asked toparticipate in a survey to provide background information for the study. In the nextstep, related literature is reviewed to establish theoretical base and five experts fromdifferent institutions were interviewed to create a model of teaching fundamentalbehavior of violin. Finally, this new model was applied to four students who wereenrolled IMITOVT- 1 class to observe their behavioral changes.The evalution of the teaching methods for the course of IMITOVT- 1 revealedinadequate use of principles of teaching program; non-parallelism betweenobjectives and principles of teaching methods; use more of descriptive teachingprograms by the teaching staff; differences between graduate of anatolioan highschool of fine arts and graduate of general high school violin students with regard tobasic fundamental techniques; and for some reason, adaptation of wrong violintechniques by the graduate of anatolioan fine arts high school. In similar line, sinceeducation of basic fundamentals of violin for the students is a planned andprogrammed process, evaluation of teaching methods of violin should be done onemore time by focussing on a teaching program. With suggestions of violin teachingstaff and literature review, a new model teaching IMITOVT- 1 course is developed.This new model of teaching IMITOVT- 1 was applied to four students whowere the first year of violin students at the Abant Izzet Baysal University School ofFine Arts and Department of Music Teacher Education and they were graduatedfrom anatolioan high school of fine arts. In order to evalute the process violineducation, students were observed both at the beginning of the semestre and at theend of the semestre. The comparion of two-observation showed that the new modelof violin teaching program helped students in terms of smooting wrong violinbehavior previously.In sum, according to the results of the study, there should be more studiesdealing with teaching progran of IMITOVT- 1 course and the present model ofteaching IMITOVT- 1 course which can be further developed and changed by fieldtest results and expert opinions are suggested. Also, basic violin techniques ofanatolian fine arts high school graduates should be re-evaluated and revised.Key Words: Instructional program, Anatolian Fine Arts High School, Violin.
