The relationship of mediterranean diet compliance with biochemical parameters, oxidative damage and obesity markers in abdominal obesity

Abstract (EN)
There is evidence that abdominal obesity and related metabolic diseases are related to nutrition. In this study, we aimed to reveal the relationship between metabolic parameters, adropin, oroxigenic and anorexigenic peptides, antioxidant and inflammatory markers with abdominal obesity and Mediterranean Diet Compliance Scale (MDCS) in abdominal obese and non-obese women. Healthy, aged between 18-50 years old abdominal obese (34) and non-obese (34) women were included in the study. Biochemical parameters and anthropometric measurements were made in the Nutrition and Dietetics polyclinic, and MDCS was evaluated. In addition, orexigenic and anorexigenic peptides, inflammatory and oxidative stress parameters were evaluated by ELISA method. Abdominal obese women had higher HOMA-IR, liver damage enzymes, CRP, TNF-alpha, IL-6, and impaired lipid panel, while lower MDCS and plasma antioxidant capacity. In addition, abdominal obese women had lower adropin, obestatin, ghrelin and Nesfatin-1 levels, but a higher GH/OB ratio. It was observed that HOMA-IR, GGT, cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL parameters were negatively correlated with MDCS in both groups, while AST/ALT ratio was positively correlated with MDCS only in the abdominal obese group. Adropin and obestatin in both groups, but Nesfatin-1 only in the abdominally obese group showed a positive correlation with MDCS. In contrast, TNF and IL-6 were negatively correlated with MDCS in both groups but CRP only in the abdominally obese group. In both groups, it was observed that the plasma antioxidant level showed positive correlation with MDCS. Currently, the negative metabolic parameters of young and healthy abdominally obese women reveal their risk of possible metabolic diseases. It has been seen that the Mediterranean diet plays an important role in the prevention of both abdominal obesity and these negative parameters. For this reason, it is thought that the Mediterranean diet may be effective in the prevention of obesity and related metabolic diseases with its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant content, especially the type of fat.
