Abdulhamid b. Yahya and his art of writing

SUMMARY The Umayyad Period has a special importance in terms of Arabian literature. İn this period, as a result of intimate relations with the foreign nations, the society has experienced a great many political, social and cultural changes and developments. The cahanges happening in the society have affected the literature of the time in a positive way and have resulted which have been very important regarding Arabian Literature. İt is also in this period that the art of certain characteristics up to this period has appeared as an art in the field of literature at the time. The chief person who has led the art of writing to reach its peak is Abdulhamid b. Yahya el Kâtib îranion by birth, Abdulhamid has worked as a teacher for some time and later in his life he has met Salim and learnt the art of writing from him. His knowledge of Arabian literaure is immense and he is also specialized in Persian. By adding some new methods to the art of writing he has transformed it into an art, the rules and the limits of which are known. All of his literary production consist of letters about many different subjects, the number of which is probably 1000. His two letters addressed to the clerks and the heir to the throne at the time are the most famous of all of his letters. He has written hii> works in a delightful manner in such a way as to appeal the eyes, ears and spirits of the readers. He has been praised much by his contemporaries and by the later generations and he has become the pioneer of the prose in the Abbasian Period.
