This thesis represents a synthesis of the mortuary data at the Middle and Late Bronze Age site of Tell Atchana, ancient Alalakh. Drawing on data from the burials excavated by Sir C. L. Woolley in 1936-9 and 1946-9 and K. A. Yener from 2003-present, this thesis goes beyond the descriptions that have been published to date in order to analyze burial practices at the site throughout the second millennium BC. The unpublished burials excavated between 2006 and 2012 are treated in detail, and a three-dimensional geographic information system (GIS) model of these latest burials is presented that facilitates the spatial and stratigraphic understanding of the extramural cemetery area discovered at the site. The burial record at Tell Atchana is comprised of 284 excavated graves of various types, including simple graves, secondary burials, infant pot burials, and one stone chamber tomb. This thesis examines burial types, orientation, position, and grave goods at the site and compares the results to burials found at other sites in the region in order to gain a comprehensive view of funerary rituals and burial practices at ancient Alalakh.
