Effects of troponin I on emergency department COPD patients on hospitalization, prognosis and mortality

Troponin elevation can be seen in patients admitted to emergency department for COPD. Recent studies shows that this troponin elevation may predict hospitalization time and mortality. this study is performed prospectively over 100 COPD patients subsequently admitted to Dicle University Hospital Emergency Department between january 2008 and june 2008. 89 patients were in non elevated troponin group and 11 were in elevated troponin group. We performed the statistical analyzes by using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for Windows 14. 0. Kisquare test was used for univariate analyses of categorical variables and için İndependent Samples T Test was used for continous variables. 62 of 100 patients were male and 38 of 100 were female. Mean age was 66,45±13,852 in elevated troponin group and 69,21±12,130 in non elevated troponin group. When troponin elevated group and non elevated group are compared there were no statistical difference for mortality (p=1.000), hospitalization time (p=0.744), vital signs, electrocardiographic datas, arterial blood gases. We found no predictive value of troponin for mortality and hospitalization time. Only meaningfull relation was found between troponin and CK(P=0,012More studies are required for finding the potential mechanisms of troponin elevation in COPD. Troponin doesnt predict mortality and hospitalization time in COPD and for this reason new markers has to be investigated. Multicentric studies including larger series are required on this subject.
